Warm mist is best for babies if you need to put something like vicks in the water.
Warm mist fell out of fashion largely because the old steam humidifiers were dangerous if accidentally tipped over. But I'm sure the newer ones are quite safe, and the warm mist is more pleasant and more effective. The main downside is that they can make the room stuffy if it gets too warm.
Cold mist is, well, cold.
If you own your own home it's worth considering a whole-house humidifier. It won't replace the room unit for a croupy baby, and generally does nothing in warmer months, but can help quite a bit in colder weather if you have family members who don't tolerate the dryness well.
