I’d like to hear from anyone who has had good luck painting an older garage floor. I know that prep is the key to doing it right. How did you deal with old imbedded oil stains? Did you acid etch the floor before the paint?

We've had good success with Lowes' 2-part epoxy for concrete - comes with its own acid wash. Scrub and scrape real good, then use the acid only if there are still oil stains after scrubbing. Let it dry real good, mix the two parts, let it "cook" about a half hour, roll on, sprinkle the fairy dust, and let it dry overnight. Strong stuff, looks good.

We've done about 23 so far, all 2-car garages, existing slab, the oldest ones were done about 8 months ago - all are holding up very well so far

i had a commercial shop floor that was in terrible shape. i went to the dollar store and bought the BIG box of tide detergent and started scrubbing. this really cleaned it pretty good. then bought some sulfuric acid and scrubed it again.i'm using a pressure washer each time.
i bought the paint at s.w .it was a floor paint that was a moisture cure urethane.this stuff was unbieleavable. once you open the can you have to use it,i did get by with doing the second coat the next day. but when you get done just let the stuff harden in the can and take a hammer to it if you question it's hardest.

We ended up having a commercial company (Premier Garage) come in to do ours. the original floor was VERY rough. they ground it and sanded it then did all the prep (Acid wash etc).After having them come back 3 times the floor now looks ok -- still not what I expected.It is still rough in spots and they dripped some of the epoxy on my newly installed paver driveway!!!) I've been told by others not to expect any of the paints to cover all the blemishes so I guess I'll live with it!
