Best paint scraper – detail work
I’m doing an exterior painting job on a house with a bunch of crown moulding and similar types of details. I’m looking for a scraper that will allow me to efficiently prep the curved surfaces of this type of molding- the smallest scraper in my current arsenal is 1″ and doesn’t allow me to get into the tighter areas. Any recommendations?
Thanks

Hyde makes a moulding scraper, it is probably about the best you can find. Keep a file handy so you can keep the edges sharp.

I find these two, from Lee Valley, very usefull.

The first one looks cute, have you ever used it? Look at the one I posted, and see how the blade mounts.
You wouldn't hate the price either, and you can actually find replacement cutters for it.
I've used the first one for a short period and will likely buy one to replace my old scraper, made by the same company, which was just a rod with a screw on the end of it. This one has a nice molded rubber handle and a scabbord that clips to your belt. I was supplied with the triangular version of the second URL last year for a couple of weeks and it was fine..

Like I said, cute, but the cutters aren't keyed to the head, so they will spin around.
I made a scraper out of a 15g- 5" x 7" scrap of stainless steel. I traced the profile of my crown on it and cut and ground it until it fit perfectly. It made scraping alot easier for paint prep. It fit well in the hand and you can get a good amount of flex/ tension as you draw it across the moulding.
It took about an hour to make it.
Good Luck rg
