Can anyone give me some advice on where to get (or even on how to find) the best price for 4,800 BF of Douglas Fir 3×6 T&G, WP4, specified lengths? The timber frame company (who is doing the timbers) wants to charge me $9,600 ($2/BF!). Seems pretty steep to me!

That sounds like $3 lin ft for your 3x6.
Ifin my math is correct I'd say that's a purty decent price.
Others will chime in.
Why not 2x6?
Yes, that does work out to $3/lin ft. The engineer chose 3" thick - these boards are for the roof deck - they span 8' and support a substantial snow load.

For 3x6 df I would say that is a damn good price.
Sounds like a decent price to me - but I'm on the East coast.
...I'm gonna be figuring a job where I'm gonna need exactly that...3x6 kiln dried for an open garden room. It'll mainly be a roof to sit under in my cutomers yard and has to match the ceiling of the room I'll be connecting it to....wonder what east coast prices ARE.
I was thinking of calling a local mill around here but I can't wait for it to dry out so...
Might find some deals in Brooklyn where they have rescued lumber from some of those old buildings/factories...

I actually built some when I needed a small amount to do a match on a remodel.
Mine was the laminated version so I just got some 1x , glue and laminated my own. Just a dozen or so 12' boards though.

I considered that...thought to use rough sawn 1x like I've used for board n batten siding...then sand it down a hair so it aint SO funky. I dunno...I'll have to ask my customer. I don't think it'd match whats in the house which you see through a buncha windows. Inside the house it's solid 3x but it is stained dark so I might get away with it...we shall see...have to get the job first. My archy was there this morning taking measurements so....

Worst part of mine was matching the dates on the pennies the owner had used as plugs over screws in the floor. Two story bay push out with the decking as the second floor flooring.
Owner had plugged the entire second floor wood floor with pennies!

It sure would be cool to see a picture of that.
It's gonna look real neat or stupid, I'm undecided.
No photo's unfortunately. All my old photos from the pre digital days except very few went in either a divorce or a subsequent theft. Keep thinking I am going to take my son out for a tour some day and have him shoot all the places I did around here . He is a much better photog than I and has much better equipment. Not likely to get inside shots though. Just have to catch him when he is passing though here. I do know the floor looked great ,but after some years the owner was looking for epoxy to glue the pennies in again in a few spots.

I just got quote $9.80 for a laminated 3x6 T&G with Doug Fir. Sounds like a great price to me.
the only way to beat that price is to buy green, dry it yourself, and then run it though your own milling equipment yourself..
That's what I did.. but it's taken me nearly 8 years thus far and I have several years to go..
