Gerald,
Although I am primarily a general contractor I also am a licensed mechanical contractor and do all my own a/c work. I have found the Rheem/Ruud brand (similar to gm/chevy) to be one of the quietest and best built units available "over the counter". Only approved dealers are allowed to carry units such as trane, lennox and carrier. I personally have two trane units in my house and they have provided excellent service and efficiency. The drawback is they can only be purchased through an approved trane dealer thus increasing cost. If cost is not an object i would go with a trane. IF cost is a factor and you still want quality i would go with a rheem. These units have a scroll compressor and are very quiet. I have installed many of them with few problems or warranty callbacks.
