I’m looking for some creative input into framing a shed roof on a shed I am about to construct. The plan is for a 16×20 slab with an 18″ turndown along the sides as a foundation. (turndown is required by county). The other option is a pole building, but I am concerned about longevity of the poles. And keeping it square. Any PT lumber I’ve ever used contorts more than that asian girl I keep hearing so much about here.
On to my question:
I will then stick frame the walls in traditional fashion. I was going to use an 11 7/8 LVL as a ridge beam (I just happen to have a 20′ one here) and then use 10′ 2×6 for rafters. I priced trusses and they are cost prohibitive. Not having done much roof framing (except with pre-engineered trusses) I am relatively unfamiliar with the details. My concern is lateral forces pushing outwards on the sidewalls without some sort of rafter or the equivalent of the bottom chord of a truss. I can see that snow and wind loads etc will exert lateral pressure on both the ridge beam and the sidewalls. I am in central MD so snow loads aren’t huge, but we do get a doozy once in a while. Do I need to brace the sidewalls somehow or can I get away with just a ridge beam and rafters? I know cathedral ceilings are stick framed all the time, but I am unfamiliar with the details.
Thanks for any and all insight.

first thought is that what you want to build is a gable roof...a shed roof really doesn't have a ridge beam....
OK then, when you do a cathedral style roof, it is necessary to provide a structrual ridge beam instead of just a ridge board. For the small size of this shed, your LVL would probably qualify in the gulf coast states where snow is not an issue. For your location, that doozy once ion a while will be something to worry about. So rafter ties ( ceiling joists) at 4'OC would take care of things.
The confusion from the other poster is from your use in the title of the term shed roof. You mean a roof on a shed, while he is thinking of a shed STYLE roof which slopes one way only and has no ridge.

My first read on it too, untill I read the whole context where he mentions a ridge so he is just not fully aware of what his choice of terms might imply is all. We see that all the time here with people calling rafters joists and joists studs....but I know you or I would never call Joyce a stud. ;)

Apparently, you have never seen Joyce throw a horseshoe.
Even if it wasn't attached to the horse when she threw it, she was a stud.
lol...
Well, I have now that you mention it. Who was it - Luka? that has the scars to prove your point?
