best way to frame hip roof with trusses
We’ll be doing a big framing job this summer (multiple 3-plexes). The roof will be 3:12 with many regular hips mostly built with trusses. I have built a feww like this before but it has been awhile and those didn,t seem to go that well. Anyway, does anybody have any good framing tips or know of a good book or article on this?
thanks
Dave

Frame the hips on the ground, I learned it from Blue here.
Follow the truss layout very carefully. I couldn't believe how easy, safe and fast this was.
Either way if you build it on the ground or the plates, after all the mono trusses are nailed to the girders send two guys off nailing fascia on. The set points in hip trusses are the fascia and the girder. Once the fascia is on you can start filling in any framing needed to fill in where the trusses left off.
Throw the first few courses of sheets on then you can start nailing your purlins on.
I always had a he!! of a time with hip trusses, I could get them done but it took way too long. I figured out the problem, I was making them too hard.
Thanks for the input., those are some good tips.
What is the best method of installing the blocking?
When you say purlins, what do you mean exactly?
Thanks
Dave
I am not sure what blocking you are talking about.
Do you block in between the trusses, as they step up from the girder?
My hip sets usually have girders and mono trusses, then some step trusses as you work towards the peak. These stepped trusses are dropped 1-1/2" so 2x4 purlins can be ran on the top chords like a lay down hip truss if you are familar with those.
now I feel a little stupid. The 2x4 purlin system sounds like the way to go. thanks again.

Some truss companies drop the top chords in the flat areas, and build a lay down frame to sit in there. That simplifies framing a heck of a lot.
Not all cmopanies do that, so it would be worth asking about.
As Stiletto said, our framers assemble the hips on the ground and then crane the assembly into place. This would normally include the girder trusses and all the small mono-trusses. Some fascia and web bracing is installed to stabilize the assembly before the lift. Sometimes a few sheets of sheathing too. It helps a lot to have a somewhat flat area to assemble them in.
The truss layout sheets for the job in the attached pic looked like a small phonebook...
