I picked up a box of used hole saws cheap at a custom metal fabricator that was going out of business. The arbors in the 6″ and the 5″ are jammed and I couldn’t remove them with just vice-grips.
Any tips for unscrewing these? It looks like the user didn’t engage the two pins on the collar so the arbor threaded in under load. (I am thinking of lag bolting these down through the other holes and using a pipe wrench on the arbor….)
Are there any recommended 1/2″ arbors for these rather large hole saws? It seems ridiculous to drive these with a “3/8 inch quick change” arbor more suited to a 2″ hole saw. The hole saws are made by Lennox, Fastenal, DeWalt etc so the arbor thread and pin layout is standard.
Thanks
John

Lenox, Starett, or Milwaukee arbors - all 1/2" hex shaped drive, 2 pins.
They will still look pretty small when mounted with a 5" or 6" hole saw.
Jammed hole saw due to pins not engaged.......
You lag bolt idea might work....
My technique - only used once - then I learned to always watch the pins.....
Clamp arbor drive into a good vise, turn hole saw with a strap or chain wrench. A bit of heat applied to the hole saw helps.
Can be really tough - depends on how hard the saw was jammed with the pins disengaged - and how big the drill motor was turning it when it jammed.
Good luck!

good idea about the heat, but be carefull with it.Ever have an arbor snap on you when drill a 4" hole from top of a 30' ladder? You probably don't want to find out how good your balance is, come to think of it...;)

snapping arbor....30' ladder...
I missed that experience, and if it's all the same to you, would prefer to continue missing it.
JimNever underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
A couple of pipe wrenches has worked for me.
If they are jammed, and they work , why would you want to loosen them? Just use then as hole saws with arbors that will never come loose and arbors that you will never lose. Vic
Clamp the hole saw to something (woodworking vice works well) and use an impact gun to loosen the arbor... amazing how well inpact guns/drivers work on stuff that's stuck like that.
Before you start fighting them to separate the arbors, put them in the freezer overnight and then try separating them.
