I have a bostich compressor (1 horse) that seems to be binding up when I try to start it. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Strike with hammer, repeat as needed.
(Just kidding of course)
Does it have air in it when you are starting it ?
Empty the tank. That would be Tim's next suggestion.
If it starts on an empty tank, let it run until it achieves full pressure (120#). When it shuts down you should hear an escape of air from the unloader valve. More than likely you will not hear that hisssss of escaping air. Means the unloader valve is stuck.
You can replace the valve or as someone else suggested, tap it with a hammer every time it stops running :)
The unloader releases tank pressure from the cylinder head. That little escape of air is coming off the cylinder head. If it doesn't vent off, the compressor is trying to start against 120 lbs. of head pressure.
That is the most likely culprit. I believe the Bostich compressor has a thermal overload on the motor with a reset button. The fact that the motor is trying to turn means it is not tripped on thermal overload, but continued attempt to start may burn up the motor starter.
FYI, you should always drain the compressor tank when not in use. Open the petcock at the bottom of each tank and bleed the air and condensed water out each day after use. This will increase you tank life and keep the crude in that forms in the bottom of the tank from building up. To much crude and it will foul the unloader valve, as well as you air tools, if you don't have an inline filter/trap.

is it an oil lube?
if so, squirt some liquid stench into the air intake (after removing the filter) so it gets to the piston.
you might have to remove the pipe from the piston to the tank to get the LW into thr piston area.
We always get it right!!!

You probably have to clean or replace the backcheck valve. It is in the tank, at the end of the tubing. Release some air by either pulling the safety ring or use a blow gun,the compressor will kick in and your back to work, until the next time it binds up.
If you remove the back check valve, clean it with a solvent and put it back, you may have to replace it. This valve keeps the air from flowing back to the tank after reaching the cut out pressure.

Winter, I once took two Emglos (electric) to the repairman. After taking one apart, the repairman told me that the brushes were gunked up with sawdust and dirt. All he did was blow them clean and both the units ran like new. He advised me to blow out the windings on the electric motor once a week.

Another possibility is that the points in the pressure switch are pitted and there's not enough juice going to the motor through the switch. Remove the cover and inspect them. If filing them works - bonus! You might have to replace the switch which is a bore.

Seems the most obvious has been overlooked.....you plugging directly to an outlet, or off of an extension cord?
If using a cord, step it up to extra heavy duty (12 gauge?)
