I am fininishing up renovating an older house. The basement as a masonry fireplace, and the fire brick is badly discolored. It is probably stained from smoke, but it is unevenly colored throughout, and even after an acid wash, it still remains unsightly. I know acid will not remove smoke stains, but I thought it would etch the face of the brick. I would like to, like the Rolling Stones, paint it black. Is there a product out there I can use? Has any one else ever dealt with this problem?
Thanks,
Bill

Yep...sure is....unfortunately I don't have any info for you.
Here's a bump to draw the attention of someone who does.
Oh how they pound, raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale, telling their tale,
Gaily they ring while people sing
songs of good cheer, Christmas is here....
I installed a gas-ified cast iron stove in an old fireplace (with a dedicated SS chimney up through the old flue).
Painted the old firebrick after cleaning with high-heat stove spray paint from Home Despot.
Fine after 6 years, but the owner just uses the gassed stove - no flames licking on the paint.

I thought of this also. Have you used it before in a fireplace? I'm thinking a fireplace is much hotter than an engine block, however the porosity of the brick would help the paint hold on better.
Thanks,

The high temp paints are rated at 1200, some to 1500.But they are speced for use on metal.http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=39&SBL=1

Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
But if he tries it, what's the worst that can happen? I would think it'll just flake off.********************************************************

On seven or eight of them, yes.The hottest flame path at back will indeed burn off any paint you use, but 85-90% of the visible area will remain.

You can take a candle, &, working carefully, blacken it all over with...carbon black! Gives a more authentic look, & you never have to worry about it burning off - also will not make bad fumes.
Superior Clay makes a black or merlot firebrick stain. Never used it myself but considering it as a solution to a similar problem. Jayhttp://www.rumford.com/store/firebrickstain.html
He can also get a black grout and sponge it on, if the surface is cleanmed well first.
