I’ve had a contractor call me if I’ve ever come across a black underside of an existing roof sheathing? He’s concerned that it may be mold. I’ve never come across this in any homes that I’ve had project in. Has anybody else come across this? If this is mold is it primarily because of poor attic ventilation, possible venting of dryer or bathroom exausts into the attic instead of out the roof?

Likely mildew or a growth of SOME sort of micro-organism, and likely that it is related to too much moisture on that surface...
It takes a lab test to know that it is mold tho.

Drywer and bathroom vents should ALWAYS be vented to outside, so if that is the case, that is probably the source of the problem.
