Boiler and A/C on Same Thermostat?
I’m installing a Buderus wall mount boiler as well as a Lennox air conditioning unit in a remodel. My mechanical contractor tells me that without going very expensive thermostatic controls I’m not able to use the same residential-grade thermostat to control both units.
Does this ring true? It seems odd that both units can’t be controlled by a single thermostat by just switching from heat to a/c.
Thanks.

I know it can be done with the addition of a cheap relay.
And it has been awhile since I installed one, but IIIRC all of the digital setback units have jumpers on the (R and Rc maybe) and you can separate the heating terminals from the AC terminals.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Just checked out their web site. It seems that their control units contain much of the functionality of a thermostat. They also make a room sensing unit. If I understand the publications correctly, the control unit has the circuitry and logic for handling things like different temperature settings for different times of day ("setback") and determines when to cut the system on. The "sensing unit" is mounted where you would normally mount a thermostat and simply relays the temperature to the control unit.
Maybe you could jerry-rig something, but I'd bet your HVAC man is correct.
