Both of the prehung exterior doors I have installed do this. I end up having to sometimes pull the door in the closed direction to relieve pressure and get the bolt to retract. Is it simply a matter of moving the striker plate? Or is it the cheesy hardware I am using (starts with a K.)

You can move the plate and patch the mortise or file the edge of the plate that's binding. There normally is some slop between the size of the bolt and the opening in the strike. This is the deadbolt you're talking about right?
*I had similar problem with the latch (not the deadbolt) with a Baldwin lockset on my front door. It simply would not operate when there was any pressure on it from strike plate (mechanism binding)- always had to pull door toward you in order to operate the latch. I played and re-played with it (re-set, re-aligned, lubricant, some new parts) for a year and never right. Finally put in a Schlage at half the price and has always worked perfectly. The "ten pounds of expensive and beautiful brass" that constitute the Baldwin now sits on a shelf in the basement, waiting for who knows what. Any others had similar problems with Baldwin? It sure looked great "but it didn't hunt". Randy
*Calvin's got the fix, IF, the bolt is off center and actually binding in the strike. Could be malfunctioning mechanism, maybe a loose hinge or a jamb sag because you didn't get it tight at the top hinge. Check everything else before you go to boogering.
*Randy, Call Baldwin at 1 800 566 1986 tell them about your problem. They will send you a replacement part FREE! Baldwin is very good about this. G.
*First question I'd have to ask is who installed this stuff? Gettem back to fix it. I don't quite understand how you pull a door to a closed position, unless it's an outswing. Anyway, file the side of the strike where it's binding 'til it don't, or move the strike. Elementary, Watson...eh, wot?
*Thanks for Baldwin number. I had forgotten all about lockset sitting on shelf until William started his thread. Randy
*'snort...> I don't quite understand how you pull a door to a closed position, maybe he's standing outside?
*Many times it's the anti-pick device dropping into the strike hole that causes this.
*Doh!
*This is a great reason to own a Dremel.Make the hole bigger.Done.Ed.
*Just an update on question I had posed to thread regarding Baldwin I'd forgotten about: I used #800 and called tech support. They said it sounded like "bad transmission" (small gearbox). They immediately sent new gear box and thumb latch. This dog may hunt yet. Randy
