Book Vine

jonblakemore | Posted in Business on March 21, 2005 06:01am

The Marketing Bibliography thread got me thinking about starting a vine.

A vine is basically a way to share items (music, print media, etc). I will start by posting a book that I’m willing to send out. 10 of you will respond to me that you are interested. I will send the book to the first person, they send it on to the second, etc. The tenth person will send the book back to me. The only cost is the price of postage to the next person in line.

A more thorough explanation can be found here:
http://webpages.marshall.edu/~reed/vine_etiquite.htm

The book that I would like to offer is “The Builders Guide to Running a Successful Construction Company.”
http://taunton.com/store/pages/070640.asp

To join the vine, post your name (screen name is preferred for ease of identificaiton) and email address.

If I fail to follow through, will I incur the curse of some ancient vengeful Mayan Deity?

I already have this book, but I wanted it to get off to a good start by showing everyone how the format goes. Whoever is next, add your name to the list and repost the list.

I think the idea is great, but I'm not willing to make a committment. I'd prefer the free flowing "just pass it along" method.

I used to love bowling. I joined a league. I hated bowling on the league simply because is became an obligation. If I sign up on the book vine list, I have another obligation. I don't have time for an obligation at this juncture.

Blue, here's your obligation.Read the book when it arrives. Don't take 3 months and spill coffee all over it. Email the next person on the list for their address, package and send the book.Seems pretty simple to me. Checking out books from the library almost has more obligation than a vine.

and now you know why I don't check books out of a library!

I'm going to guarantee I WILL spill coffee and procrastinate sending it on...

Jon - Sorry I can't make next month's Book Vine meeting.

No worries, I'll have that book review you asked for done real soon. I know the review is late, but since my dog died, can you please waive the fine?

I knew I shoulda taken the time to read the fine print on the Book Vine membership before signing on. This ain't no vine, it's Kudzu.

Boys, boys, boys,You're making it out to be harder than it has to be. You read a book and send it on. Simple as that. The only real reason to sign up is so you don't have to remember to ask for the book 3 months from now when it is available. If we can handle contracting this should be cake!

Maybe we should just send it back and forth between the three of us and brag on here about how much fun it is.These guys will be jealous in no time.

          10. SonnyLykos | Mar 27, 2005 09:13pm | #24

If this is going to be done correctly, everyone should buy their own copy.  That way, as the difference aspects, authors contentions, philosophies, etc. of each book is discussed, every one of us will have their own copy from which to refer.

I don't just read my books.  I study them  loke a college text.  I also often review parts of them or in one way or another, refer to them, so they become part of my library.   I don't think it's asking to much for each of us to spend(even a used book on Amazon) $10 - $30 per month, assuming each book is discussed for a month (or longer) before going onto another.

            Anyway, just my two cents.

john... we've already got a simlar thing going..

       right now ..

there is a book out there called American Fish  or something.. anyways.. Ron Budgell sent it to me.. blodgett... sphere... i think Jaybird has it now..

so the concept works..  but the 8 person sign-up sheet doesn't ..

it 's more like.. " i just read this   book about ___________.. who want's it next ?"

i sent out "building with an Atttitude.. blue sent it on to Eric..
