Just finished my 1st big paying project this week. I’ve done a lot of trim and shelves, but this is my 1st built-in unit.
It turned out great and the customer (a six year old girl) loves it. Please remember that I didn’t pick the colors. The pink (almost a bubblegum color) was the little girl’s choice.
thanks

Joe,
Very nice work. You should be proud of yourself. I notice the face frame on the bookcases seems to overlap the center "seat" portion. Did you build the base all the way across and put the bookcases on top, or did you use the same vertical standards all the way from floor to ceiling and just apply the face frames so they overlapped and joined the base cabinets?
Thanks.
Frank R.
I built it in six different pieces. Three bases, two bookcases and the top center piece with the lights (notice the dimmer button to the right of the window). The two end bases are just about a 1/4" thinner than the two bookcase pieces. The bookcases are sitting on top of the bases. I added the trim around the top edge of the bases after it was put together in the room.
Thanks,joe

Joe -Nice work. I thought about doing one of those for myself, maybe not in pink. I do like the beadboard. And you got paid too, cool. Keep it up.

Nice work Joe.
How'd you make the doors?
Brian P.
Thanks Brian,Don't tell the guys over at Knots, but I used biscuits. The bead board is floating in a 1/4" groove. The hinges are European. I've never used them before, but I will from now on. It's soooo easy to get the doors lined up. Joe
Very nice looking - can you post breakdown of how long it took you, how long you thought it would take and what the materials ended costing? Also, did you use the beadbord look tile board that is available in 4x8 sheets? Thanks,Julian

I quoted 40 hours, but it actually took about 50. The multiple coats of paint and the construction of the doors took the most time. If I were to quote it again, I would probably go for 45 hours. The extra time was my fault as a newbie, not the customers.
The cases are made out of 3/4" birch plywood, the doors and faces are poplar, and the bead board is the 7" x 8' mdf you can by buy prepackaged and prepainted from the big-box. The thinner planks have more detail than the big sheets, easier to use too.
The materials were around $600. Luckily, my quoted price for the materials hit right on.
Looks like a sweet project, nice work.
Re cab hardware, I am a huge fan of Blum "Inserta" hinges and their Tandem/Blumotion drawer slides.
Full 3-way adjustment on doors, and no-screw tool-free installation of hinges and clip plates. Totally spoiled me.
You did an excellent job on the built-in! One question, though. How does the little lady reach those top cabs? Is a custom library ladder in the future for her?
The parents thought the same thing. They are claiming the top cabinets for sheets and blankets. They loved the idea that she couldn't get to them.

LOL. Right. Until she really wants to. Shelving makes for a great ladder in a childs mind.
Incidently, great job.
