I can get a good deal on a Bosch 5412 – the 12″ dual bevel slider, but the handle is broken from falling off a scaffold. I’m sure I can get the replacement parts, but I’m wondering how difficult it would be to do the repair myself. I think paying to get it fixed would be costly and make the deal not worth it, so I’m considering getting it only if I could fix it myself.
Thanks all

Ted,
With a fall of enough force to break athe handle I'd be concerned that something more than just the handle might be outta whack.

hmmmm.. I didn't really think about that. That twisting handle mechanism seems pretty fragile, so I can see a small fall doing some damage to it. But then, he did say a scaffold - didn't say how high or what it landed on.
What else might break in a fall the might not be easily visible? I seems to slide okay, and the turntable, adjustments, etc.. all seem to work okay. Nothing cracked except the handle. I'm thinking this is a $600 saw I can get it for 200 plus the cost of a replacement handle. ~ Ted W ~

200, well, ya, that's worth checking to make sure the alignment is ok and can still be adjusted if needed
and check for blade wobble in the event the shaft went flooie.
Is the switch in the handle still operating ok?
If so make you could make a handle for it yourself and save the bucks from the factory deal. Maybe even make it better than what was in the first place, customized to your own fit.
Is the handle just cracked and still functional?
Maybe epoxy the thing first and see if it'll fly.

the handle is gone, non-existant. Looks like a robot got his hand ripped off. He said the handle got caught on a pipe on the way down and just ripped it right out. He was so pizzed off he just tossed the carcas in his truck and forgot to pick up the handle that was also laying on the ground.
I would test by touching the wires together, but not sure which ones.
To be honest, the more I think about it the more I'm thinking it's not worth the hassle. I don't really need the saw, just hard to turn down a good deal. But I'm asking myself just how good a deal it is.

Yup. Really- how good is the deal when you don't need it and there are possible 'issues'. Not worth the $$$ and crapshoot, and hassle to fix the thing. I would certainly pass.
Yeah, I'm gonna pass on this one. I started thinking about what may have happened to the wires deep inside the tool when they were ripped out like that. Even if he gave it to me, it could end up costing as much as a new one to fix it.
Also, he probably already looked into what it would cost to fix it and that's why he's trying to dump the problem on someone else.
Guess I just needed to sort of think out loud by asking you guys'. ~ Ted W ~

Ted, I'm not one to shy away from a good deal.... or a tool that needs fixin'. But I think you've made the right decision. I'd walk away from that one unless you were going to put Humpty Dumpty back together again just for the challenge or the fun of it.View Image
He called about 20 minutes ago and I declined, even after he dropped the price to $100. Even sounded a little peaved at me. Maybe now he knows to be more careful with expensive power tools.

I woulda took it for that, just the fence for mine was 40 bucks.
I prolly should have, but I didn't like the way he was talking to me. Turned into kind of a jerk when I turned it down. And besides, my Bosch slider is 3 years old and haven't replaced a part yet.~ Ted W ~

The handle of an old chopper of mine broke in half when it fell off some saw horses last year. With some good glue and heater hose clamps I put it back together stronger then it probably was before. Looks like cra p but it works fine again....fwtw 2 u

Handle should only have 2 wires. I'd bet the handle & switch parts would be about $35-55 total, and would probably require about 20-30 minutes to put together. Those handles may be cool cause they rotate, but even brand new, they are very cheesy feeling and I could see one breaking off very easily, without any other part of the saw having been hurt. For $100, it'd have been worth fixing, not sure about $150...JT
Ted-
Just go back and buy the thing for a hundred bucks and help the guy out.
Then donate it to the Quittin' Time auction and it'll sell for 2 bills.half of good living is staying out of bad situations
I'll dig around and see what I can contribute to QT without forking out $100. ;)~ Ted W ~

Here's an extra rotozip I have. This one the bits won't fit into the chuck, not sure why, and I have 2 others so I never bothered to find out. Better to put it into your auction than collecting dust on my shelf. I cleaned the drywall dust off to make it pretty. Use the attached photo on your auction and tell me where to send it.

Ted, thanks for the offer. I don't know what to say beyond thanks. Never having owned or used a rotozip I am at a loss at the "bits won't fit" part of it. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth nor wanting to appear ungrateful, but what do you think about it? How might I word it in the auction description? Is there hope for that baby? Looks brand new.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Your bidders know what to do. The replacement collet probably costs about $5, or they might have one on an older more beat up rotozip. For that matter, they might have the right bits for it.
I misspoke when I said I have 2 more - what I have is 2 DeWalts, which might be the reason my bits don't fit it. Maybe it requires genuine rotozip bits, available at any big box store.
This one was used on a couple of jobs, but it's not beat up or anything, as I don't kick my tools around like some do. I cleaned the drywall dust and some light paint spatter off before taking the photo. I could put it on ebay and get $35 easy, just haven't gotten around to it yet (lucky you :) I'm sure you'll get that in your auction. I think it retails for about $65 new, but that's with extra bits, a hand strap and something else, I forget what.
Just describe it as "Hardly Used Rotozip - might need a new collet". I'll stop in and answer any questions they may have (I'm "Ted" over at quittin time)
So... do I send it to you or just directly to the winner? It's up to you.~ Ted W ~

I don't know about the genius part, just glad to help out a pretty darned good forum. I got the email and sent a reply regarding shipping. Basically, if they're outside the lower 48 states they'll have to cover shipping costs.
I know it doesn't compare to the nailer FHB contributed, but still I can't wait to see what kind of attention this one gets. Should be fun! =)~ Ted W ~

Remove the collet nut, pull the collet itself out of the nut or the shaft, clean it well and reinstall. Likely someone tightened the nut down without a bit in the collet.

That didn't work out too well. Or maybe that was just a sinister plan to get me to buy a new collet! Hmmm....

So was the collet broken when you took the nut off or did it break while trying to free it up?
Curious.

Ted, I tried to transfer the image over to QT and for some reason it shows jpeg here below your photo, but all I get is a bitmap image when I copy.
I might try importing to another file and succeeding.............
or not.
Maybe you can send me a jpeg image via email-a bitmap won't appear at QT.

Actually, I'll take another photo. The one posted here shows the tool all shiny, which makes it look newer than it really is. I'll try to get one as realistic as I can. (and no, I'm not doing the 'ol switcharoo, just getting a more honest photo :)
I'll email it to you in a few minutes.
Oh, and I guess you needn't mention the collet. I'll pick up a new one, both 1/8" and 5/32" if they're available. Also forgot to mention, there is a 1/4" collet with it. I don't know when I'll be getting the replacement, but I'll let you know what I find when I do. ~ Ted W ~
