For we tool junkies a little interesting news about Bosch lithium stuff.
Also an interesting point on the company from the charitable side which I was unaware of.

I went to several tool pages, but could not find when they will sell me 18 volt Li-ion batteries to fit my current 18 volt tools.
Dewalt is talking about doing this, so I hope Bosch also ensures backwards compatibility for their existing battery platform.
Bill
Yea it's not got exactly what we want to hear.
Ive had my ear to the magazines and sites waiting for the info we want to see.
Size wise I think the 18 v is the sweet spot. And if they get much slower everybody will have gone to the Makita's.
I also read that the Hataci is backward compatible, and I'm thinking? the Milwaukee? I'm gonna go check on that rite now.
Backward compatable for Milwaukee Tools.
The 18 volt is the only one that plays both ways. Even the charger charges both the Lithium Ion as well as the NiCD batteries in the 18 volt style.
They also have a Milwaukee universal charger (the 28 volt kit comes with the charger) that covers 18 as well as 28 volt batteries. Of course there aren't any 28 volt NiCD's so there is no backward compatability there.
The Lithium Charger is where Milwaukee makes a big difference. They give a 5 year (prorated 2+ to 5 years) warranty on the battery. The battery pack has all sorts of electronic smarts as in # of charges, date first charged, Water exposure etc. that it keeps track of. According to the mfg rep, the charger is where Milwaukee holds their edge. That is what makes the battery last and last.
For the cold weather players out there the Lithium Ion is the tool of choice as it is relatively unaffected by temperature. The biggest feature on the Lithium is that the power curve is "run run run til it dies", not "run trot walk crawl die" as in the NiCD. Plus a 28v weighs as much as the 18 volt NiCD.
I still search out a wall outlet for my tool use, but when I replace the 12 v Ryobi, I'll go straight for the Milwaukee Lithium.
PS. Lithium doesn't like water. All of them are air breathers so keep every Lithium out of the open tool bucket in the rain. Rain'll kill anyone's Lithium battery.
Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that? Edited for proper grammar.

Milwaukee says that (for those of us with the old 18V NiCd) the new 18V LiIon batteries can fit on our tools...But for some reason our chargers won't work with them. So it is necessary to buy the batteries and the charger. There should be a retrofit set out later this month( in theory) consisting of 2 batteries and a charger, but I don't know the cost.
Has anybody already bought the batteries? Does it screw up the balance of the tools? Is it worth it? I notice the NiCd battery prices dropped substantially.
the rumor has it that Bosch is doing the same...
no clue on the EDD...

I hope that rumor is right. Ask the Bosch CEO next time you two do lunch, willya?Bill

Last week we had our company lunch & learn with the Mke Rep. Thank God I'm a tool nut.
He said the LiION batteries are a real special deal. It isn't like the old NiCD's of the past where when they 'rapped out you could just crack the case and resolder in the radio shack replacements. There is a lot more to it to make the system work.
These have an electronic monitor circuit in the battery case. Like I said before, the keep track of the temperature during charging (or at least feed it to the charger pack as an input) also count the number of charges (full cycle equivalent) and has a date codeing of first charge etc. Thus the 5 year warranty on the battery.
Not sure how the rest of the market measures up but he felt his lithium didn't stink.

I have the Milwaukee Nicd 18v for 2 years now and love it, and as soon as the LiIon 'kit' comes out will probably get it as the nicd bats are still cranking but starting to slow down to a shorter span. The Makita is my first choice for ergonomics and a good tool, but the Milwaukee ratings and power won me over and I converted from blue to red and don't regret it. I want to add the circ saw and recip with the hinged handle next.
busted out the dewalt 18v the other day...just because it was closer than the makita 18 ion. Havent picked up the dewalt in awhile... the dewalt 18v has soo much more power than the makita's. now there is a new 18v dewalt with even more power. love the 5 year warranty on the red's, love the feel and weight of the blue, love the power of the yellow.

I'd have to agree with this. I've had the V28 kit for over a year. It's kept in my tool trailer in an unheated pole barn over night, most every night, and no problems firing it up in the morning. Seems to get the same run time out of the charge whether it's been warm or ice cold.
