I’m considering buying the bosch trim protractor after seeing it in the last FHB on crown hanging. It looks like a cool gadget but is it useful?

Guessing not?
It sees limited use for me but when I need it I love the thing. I cut my crown in place, but if you cut it flat it would be a nice addition just for that.
Cutting your crown in place must make the weight of the miter saw a very important consideration. I admire anyone who could lug a saw up the ladder, hold it, and cut accurately. I definetely have something to aspire to.
About using the protractor (I'm getting serious now), why not just use a regular protractor for angled cuts. The only beneift the Bosch tool has is for crown. A single plane protractor is very cheap and just as effective.

I'd like to know more about cutting crown in place, too. I've cut it upsidedown and backwards, rightside up and frontwards, and, flat...does this involve sharks and lasers<G> It's okay, I can fix it!
I like to keep a few scraps of crown cut different ways to keep me straight when making several cuts (ok, so was it left miter and piece on the right or ...). I wonder if he keeps several scrap miter saws around his pieces of crown to make sure his settings are correct.
Just thinkin...Jon Blakemore
Thanks for the input, Glad I posted before I went with my impule buy, after thinking about it I really dont need it, but damn it might be nice to have around everynow and then lol
Jon, The angle finder will give you the exact miter and bevel if you cut your crown flat. When you figure your time bills at 40 - 65$ an hour the thing will pay for itself.
I've got one and it's made a world of differance. When I did my west wing I didn't have one and made all my cuts using templates. It was a major struggle. At the size and length I'm working with the smallest differance makes hugh differances. The great room went together so much easier and faster that when mine developed an electronic gremlin I was devistated. Luckily 7 corners just reached under the counter and handed me a new one...I love that store..
When you cut a 34.7 degree cut on a 9 inch wide timber, 34.6 degrees makes the timber miss the wall by over 2 inches. (or if you force it to spread, there is a noticable gap in the joint).

My friend has one, he loves it for doing any kind of angle cutting, but I haven't been allowed to use it yet( its still his new toy) so I cant' tell you how I like it.
