my home depot has a 1) bosch sdsplus 5/8″ on clearance for 99.00 reg 159.00 4.8 amp
2)a 7/8″ #11224 5.8? amp reg price 199.00
3)a 1″ #11255 6.5? amp reg price 249.00 (comes with a free grinder also)
4)a 1 1/8″ #11236 display model missing the chuck for 182.00 reg. 359.00
I dont usually drill anything bigger that 1/2″, but once in a while might go up to 7/8″ or 1″. Also I am thinking I might occasionally want to use a chipping hammer bit, is the 5/8″ unit big enough for the job? If not, what one would you go with?
Replies
I forgot to mention that even the smallest sds drill will accept the larger bits, just wondering what unit might be large enough for how I want to use it.
Just found the missing chuck for 1 1/8" unit online for 68.00. That plus the 182.00 come to a little more than I want to spend for an occasional use tool.
Get the 11255 (Bulldog) if you don't wanna spend the $$$ on the chuck for the 11236 (my choice which is what I have).
Lots of positive opinions here on the Bulldog.
hello KenDitto. I use the shnott out of mine and I love it. Thanks Craig
Get a REAL SDS tool. You can dig dirt, break concrete, drill 5/8" holes 12" deep in 15 seconds. Use core bits, hammer ground rods, drill 1 1/2' holes, cut asphalt, etc.
I've had one of these for about 6 years and never had to even replace the brushes. The Bosch will quit on you when it's time to replace the brushes. Last time I lost a day when it quit.
Never buy a wimpy tool, you'll be sorry!
I can't afford to buy cheap tools.

I used to think Hilti was good, but then they showed up at HD so I figure the'ye not made like they used to be. HD has special runs of substandard tools made just for them. Look for the HD label right on the box.

So....Any advice?
the 1-1/8' for chiseling, chipping, taking up floors, light demo and large holes (core)
the 1" Bulldog would be the one...
5 or 6 hours non stop on the 7/8" is a real strain for it....

The 11236 is worth its weight in gold at retail price. Grab it up now.
Family.....They're always there when they need you.
You might want to check out CPO bosch at:http://bosch.cpotools.com/reconditioned_tools/hammers_and_hammer_drills/rotary_and_combination_hammers/sds-plus_hammers/
or one of the other reconditioned bosch tool places.
At CPO Bosch, for example, the reconditioned 7/8" unit (224) is $140. the 1" unit (255) is $160 and the 1 1/8" (236) is $225. They presently have a $15 off coupon for orders over $150, so that will pay for the freight.
I have the 7/8 unit for occasional use which I have mostly used for drilling 1/2" holes in granite( for expansion bolts) and for chiseling out old mortar in my stone foundation wall before I repoint with new mortar. This drill is more than adequate for my purposes, but if I were to do it again, I would probably fork over the extra $10-$20 and get the 1" model.
thanks for the info, might buy it there. still not sure which one, leaning toward the
11236.......Never realized how many different drills bosch makes.
I have the 7/8 and EVERY time I use it to drill a hole in concrete I think "I love this thing" bu it has limitations. I use it mainly for holes up to 3/4 and occasional chipping. I think I have about three years on it, which may work out to about 100 hours w/ no problems.
But I just recently broke three 5/32 bits in five hours, nothing wrong with the bosch though.
