I’ve been threatening to do this for quite sometime. This is a box gutter/cornice rebuild job we did last year. Between Dale and I, we got it pretty well photo documented. We’ve done three rebuild jobs on similar houses, but this is not a real typical box gutter structure. This system ( which is a bad one ), consists of a wood plate laid in the brick wall that the joists for the 2nd floor lay on. Either the joist tails extend out to create outlookers or a similar sized 2x is laid into the brick. Brick is then laid up another two feet or so and a plate is laid on top of it to receive the rafters. The gutter box is then built on top of the outlokers and then metal cornice is hung on the out side.
Picture rr1 shows the condition before we started. Someone else had started this and realized they were in over their heads and disappeared. I’ll add to this as time alows.

Most of the outlookers and a lot of the lower plate were rotten and the bricks between the outlookers were loose, especially on the inside corners. The first time I did a job like this, the king post had been cut out of the attic, and the roof had squatted pushing the bricks above the lower plate badly out of plumb. We removed the bricks and built a 2x8 stud wall in their place between the two plates. We then went inside and built a knee wall. We tied the rafters diagonaaly to the bottom of the knee wall, which stopped the squatting.
In this case most of the brick was OK, but most of the lumber ouside the brick was gone. I shop built these cornice structure brackets (for lack of a better name) and we hung them off of the top (rafter) plate, which was in good shape.

Pic rr4 shows more of the brackets installed and pic rr3 shows the complete gutter box, ready for the liner. The bottom of the gutter is graded by shimning between the upright and diagonal legs of the brackets.Scissors cut paper. Rock breaks scissors. Paper wraps rock.

Cool pics, keep 'em coming. I've shrunk them for the dial-up challenged.

Here's a chimney top pic of Sphere and Dale's latest endeavor. Dale installed the gutter liner and Sphere shingled the curved bay roof above it.Like the Tucson, I shall rise again from the ashes.
that would be why he bought those new roof walking shoes ?Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

I got scared the 1st time I saw one of those things. If you had a real long building, you could keep it hooked to the truck, put it down it bulldog, ease off the clutch, climb the ladder and work real fast.Like the Tucson, I shall rise again from the ashes.
What's the name of the dealer?

My pleasure. Here's a roof that might be of interest to you. I made the cornice which is lead coated copper (painted). I did this roof by myself, with some ground help from my son. You're almost as paranoid as the people that're trying to kill me.
Ohhhh weeee, and I thought I was crazy....
