Box lack of deals, cheaper merchandise
Is it me or are the clearance areas of the big 3 (sears, Depot and Lowes) been pretty sparse lately? Aside from some bosch SDS bits and Milwaukee holesaws that I found at sears hardware recently, I have been walking out empty handed most times. Also, I noticed Lowes and Sears stopped carrying Klien, Sears carries a very limited selection of makita and Milwaukee, while Lowes has lost Makita and Milwaukee altogether.
Most of my tools are bought online, but occasionally it was nice to snag a deal on good tools at the big box. The only Big box that carries decent tools now is H Depot. Lowes seems content to try pushing it’s consumer lines such as Firestorm,Task Force,Porter Craple, and Kobalt. (there is a very limited selection of Bosch and Hitachi.)At least they carry Lenox accessories…Damn shame what they did to Porter Cable, ain’t it?

Simple answer to that. They quit ordering stuff like they were never going to go out of business.
No more extra stuff for you.
Lowe's and Home Depot have cut their inventory levels. In addition a lot of item in the stores have changed over to special order status especially in higher end tools, lighting fixtures and plumbing fixtures.
Get used to it. As these stores get better and better at managing inventory there will be less stuff to mark down.
The only stuff you're going to see cheap is going to be the stuff that somebody else brought back.

You mean like the "un-opened" cans of paint that actually have water in them?!
No, I mean like the time I got a Request for Credit on a bunch of lights. When they were opened up, the folks that bought them were kind enough to return their old lights.
Needless to say the store didn't get credit...
Was a cash transaction too, makes it hard to trace.
I felt bad about putting that store in the red for a few minutes.

Lowes and Home Depot have had an aggressive sale here lately to move shingles. We've slashed over $20 per square off our costs. That is a huge effect on our bottom line.
My local Home depot has stopped carrying 18 ga pneumatic brads. Only had about 6 total shelf feet of nails in general.
I purchased a lot of light fixtures at lowes in the last month... reg $19.99 for $1.24 each... and yes i still use my 10% off coupons on top of that...
very little clearance stuff at many stores... seems with so little inventory moving there is little "to clearance"
no 2 lowes are the same around here... one i do well at the other is very hit & miss
same with the HD stores...
50% off isn't even a "sale" to me... unless it was something i had I need for right then

Just hang on a couple months until the post Christmas clearance at HD.
Last year's score -- I wanted LithIon batteries for my Ryobi impact driver -- $89 each seemed a bit steep to snap-on to a $69 tool - I held off.
2008 post-Christmas clearance - 1/2" drill, flashlight, 2 batteries, charger, soft bag for $99.
2 batteries + charger, normal retail ~$210.
I'm keeping my eyes open again this year, have 2 Nicads getting tired.
