Does anyone have a good reference source on how to design (from an architectural appearance standpoint) and properly proportion box newels and handrail systems for use in high-end, residential construction? I want to rebuild my staircase and have it look fairly ornate and pleasing to the eye.

"A Treatise on Stairbuilding" by W&A Mowat has several nice drawings of old stairs and railing systems. You could scale the dimensions to fit what you are working with.
Looking at classical columns will get you started on the right proportions....
