Box/Rack for chargers and drills/driver

LEMONJELLO | Posted in Tools for Home Building on June 20, 2006 11:47am

I know I’m not the only guy out there with a bunch of different chargers and screwguns/drills.

Looking to find some ideas onbuilding a box to house them together with maybe a row of charger and a rack for batteries with a power strip to plug in instead of threee/four cases laying around chargers and batt and guns all over the place.

Any bright ideas out there? Actual boxes or examples? Good and bad comments ideas welcome.
Been hashing this around for a while and hoping someone has already thunk of this….

Two things I notice on your sketches: If the drills are in place, you may have a hard time reaching the batteries; and be sure there is enough clearance to get the batteries in and out of the chargers. It looks like you could get scraped knuckles in there.

Yeah that was not to scale or anything, just playin' around in sketchup. If I'm gonna build build something, I normally draw it on paper with a whole bunch of notes. on a sidebar.Just hoping these idiosyncracies like the ones you mentioned have been thought about and dealt with someway, thanks though. Uonly prob with the mag dish would be drilling steel maybe?!? I can't find a raisin why bits aren't magnetized, cept for collecting little metal filings. I use SS trim screws where I can because of rust. Magnet doesn't help in that case but keeping the bits handy is the main point.__________________________

Seems like a nice little box.  What about putting in a power strip, so you could have all the chargers plugged in at once, with just one plug coming out of the box?zak

            "so it goes"

No, not yet. I plan on it this weekend if I can get my inspections passed on Friday. I will update with pics. I got some ideas to play with.__________________________

I have a box that I use to haul around my cordless drills/drivers, small right angle drill, 4 batteries, chargers, and bits.  It's not as detailed as your idea, but it works.

The only problem is the weight.  It probably weighs 50lbs fully loaded.

    Schools out for summer.

I see your point on the weight. A small rolling cart with locking wheels?!?! Trying to avoid the clutter and tangled mass of cords, batteries and chargers. I got a bunch of 1/2 birch ply and some other scrap just begging to become and slick box of some kind. Be kinda nice to have on job and in the shop, just plug it in and all chargers ready. Most bits and tips are in those DW yellow plastic cases so I can make a slot/space for em too.
3"- 4" mechanics magnetic dish has also caught my eye to keep most used/changed bits handy, maybe in a recess in the top? Hmmm...__________________________

I don't know why this would be a problem, but just remember that if you keep bits on a magnetic dish, they will become slightly magnetic themselves.

I posted this awhile back...It isn't exactly what you asked for but it is good to show off. I made it from scrap cherry both ply and solid. There is a finger hole in the center of the upper layer that allows me to pull the drill with batteries and charger out together for charging or access to bits and tips below. The two plastic Plano cases in the bottom are the best for good organization. The one allows me to divide between flathead, phillips, hex, square, and misc without having to be too finicky or having to put tips and bits into little holes.

I suppose if you wanted to sacrafice Bit/tip storage you could use the lower level for storing another drill and charger.
