The D.W. saw another home with boxed in eaves and asked when I’m going to do this, we have hips on every side of our home so dealing with the gable end is not an issue.
It is my intention to use a vented fiiber cement panel.
Since I need blocking at the exterior wall, would I be better off breaking the stucco attach teh blocking to teh studs or shgoudl I just use tapcons and attach the backing directly through the stucco?
FWIW: we will be restuccoing once this is completed.

First check to see where the windows will fall relative to the new soffit, and then make sure the DW understands how it will look. You might want to do a mock-up to show her.
I'd not even tapcon, just use longer screws and hit the studs after you drill through the stucco. Or don't trt for studs and tapcon away every 16" or so. The soffit isn't that heavy. Run ya a 2x2 back there and 2x2's to the fascia level along side the raftertails and thats it.
