I started putting the treads into this t-shaped stairs with 45 degree uppers.
I am making this stairs in three section…upper left…upper right..and the main bottom section.
The newels are solid brazilian cherry and are 4.5 inches square. Is this wood ever heavy.
But….just a two extra guys and we can lift these units into place.

Would like to see them installed, looks awwwwsome!
Boy will that cherry "take off" when finished. That will be one beautiful pc.
A question about fasteners. I assume you use pocket screws up into the tread. What is used straight into the back of the tread? And the others you use in assembly?
thanks.

Calvin: I use square drive screws every five inches into the back of the treads...with glue of course.
The newels are all pocket screwed internally. No fasteners outside whatever. It makes it very clean and super strong.
These newels are to be cut for the proper length top and bottom. I just fit the stairs around them....then take them out for shipping. Once the stairs is inside the house...I just slide the newels in and draw everything up tight inside with screws.
I build them exactly level both directions in my shop....and square with the treads as well of course. As long as I set the stairs level....the newels will be nice and vertical and square. I love building them this way instead of onsite.

I think the Gyrocopter is becoming like the Burger King, just appearing in random shots.
Beautiful work.
lol
That Burger Freak guy is getting creepier.
I am bringing down the right side of this t-shaped stairway. Next will be the mid landing....followed by a seven step section projecting to the front.
Stan
just a couple more shots. I have the winder base on and am fitting the big square mid landing tread. It is mortised into the newels.
My plan of attack for setting this stairway is.....
place the mid landing tread roughly in place and let it float...
set the whole left and whole right units in place....these will already have had their newels lagged in from inside...
set the winder and mid landing newels into place....
adjust the mid landing tread into the nosing mortises in the mid landing newels...
set the lower straight section into place...

Stan, excellent as usual. Question...do you actually DESIGN the stairs or work from a print ?
I have 3 stariwells in my house, only one actually has stairs, I removed the winders for acess to the bad logs, the woodstove eats up the middle well, and the 3rd has steep narrow ,dangerous straight run.
This one you are doing really has me thinking of my options...I might need a new perspective from from someone elses eyes, before I decide on what I will ultimatly constuct, and wanted to know how much input you actually contribute to the design..do you cosult with the end user? or the Arcy? How do you derive the final outcome?
Many thanks, esp for the incentive.

Sphere: I usually design the stairs.
The code requirements are the main thing.
HEY..just send me a sketch of your stairwell...with the floor to floor height....width...any quirky details....and I will see what I can come up with.

Ok..but "I'm the sherriff around here" ( doing the best Barney Fife) Lol.
Stan, I thank you..I do have a unique situation...I will go off board if it is OK to your schedule..I really am flummoxed.
Time for me shut up and quit thinking about it, let another have a shot at it.
My abilty to design, impeids my faculties to produce, and my production can be impeded by my dreams..say a catch 22..
Thank you for even considering my offer, or plight.
I will generate a floorplan with F to F height..god almighty, I need a rain day.
Thanks,,Be talking at you..

103 ff ...to ff. floor well hole is 78", ferget width ( it is locked in by joists) and the code will not apply for head room ( I am grandfathered in) I am 6'4'' so the well opening will be a constant..
Ah crap..lemme get a sketch of iot to you..this a really old house, and yet again, I am not as smart as I think I am. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
