Everybody enjoys a picture book so why not a photo album put together by the folks who frequent these threads. Shed a little insight on who we are, what we do and what we see in our everyday life. Big city, the burbs or rural. Kids, pets, the garden, stuck in traffic, work or play no specific topic just life in general. So simply for the enjoyment of all lets keep this going and see what moments in time the camera captures.
I’ll start out:
Mid April 2003 just off AuTrain Beach, Lake Superior, halfway between Munising and Marquette Michigan. A friend and I take advantage of a sunny calm day to enjoy the remains of the winters ice cliffs before they break up and head out to sea. Depending on the direction of the storms some years the cliffs build up to 50 ft tall, these are about half that size.
Replies
Say, what's all that reddish brown stuff on the ice??
......probably sand ........
Sand, blows in off the dunes, where there is no sand the ice is a real pale blue color.
OK, I'll play. Be good to see the photo gallery get more use.
We went on a trip recently with BIL and his wife. See if you can guess where

Guinness?........BRILLIANT!
Guinness is my personal favorite. I've also recently tried a stout that is new to me . It is called Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
From their website.....
Double Chocolate Stout (5.2% ABV)
View Image Young's Double Chocolate Stout has an intriguing twist. Chocolate malt and real dark chocolate are combined with Young's award winning rich, full flavoured dark beer to craft a satisfyingly indulgent, but never overly sweet experience.Pale ale and crystal malt, chocolate malt, special blend of sugars, Fuggle and Goldings hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence.
Note from the Head BrewerThe combination of chocolate and beer is surprisingly easy to drink.

Christmas and kids getting the tree, the best time of year. My sister and I always went in the woods and cut our own tree. The first year I wasn't a good judge of height and my dad had to cut the bottom 4 ft. off so it would fit in the room.

those are great pics. I grew up in LM - but my grandparetns/extended family are in Mqt, Ishpeming and Negaunee. I have many fond memories of Gitchagumee.
I grew up in in LM as well, Detroit from 52 to 78 & transmutated myself up to the UP in search of cold winters and warm women, found both. If you ever get up this way stop in and say Hi.
Good idea for a thread. I'll play.
We got our first good snowstorm of the year today. Here's a few shots. And one of our house tonight with the Christmas lights on. I wish it came out better. It doesn't really capture how still, quiet, and beautiful it is out there right now in the fresh powder. I just came in from making the last few passes with the snowblower followed by a good 1/2 hour of romping in the snow with Mulligan, our german shephard. Man, does that dog love playing in the snow.
It's a very good night here.

..wow, any gators?
Man that's beautiful Pete.
thanks, yes there are big #### dog eating gators in there. plus shrimp by the bucket load, big reds, crabs, moccassins etc.
I was gonna say I'd like to paddle my kayak out your way then you mentioned the reptiles, yiikes!
i've paddled my canoe through gators enough to feel comfortable in the knowledge that they really don't want to eat me. I think the mass of the canoe makes them think this is just too big to eat -- now, I don't know about when they start getting horny.
my old girlfriend and I did tip one time right near a gator slick and we were superhuman in our efforts to right the canoe and get our butts back on board. regrettably lost a real nice Penn reel and ugly stick in that episode.
I suppose, like anything else, its what you are used to. It's been on my list of things to do, kayak through the Cypress swamps. The wife won't go anyplace it never snows so I guess that's out. The closest I ever came to filling my shorts was smokin around a fast bend in the river and surpriseing a black bear checking his favorite fishing hole.
dont worry -- i'm still scared of 'em. just a healthy respect. like when we bring a good sized shark, barracuda or kingfish into the boat -- when they start thrashing we all start doing the high step. but like piffin says above, adrenaline is your friend.
look at the teeth on this s.o.b
Adrenaline surges will heal all and turn you superhuman in the blinkl of an eye!I did something stupid once. OK, Many times, but only once in this story...I used to do phot6ography a lot. Found a gator pond back of where I rented a bit ( this was when I lived in FLA) andclimbed the fence ( eight strands) to get some good pictures. I golt up as close behind himn as I could. He appeared to be snoozing. I probably was close enough to touch his tail and clicking merrily away. All of a sudden, I was looking at a mouthfull of teeth in the viewfinder. That fence that took me five minutes to carefully and quietly climb over was flying UNDER me in half a second. I'm not too sure what happened to the camera. A zoom lens suddenly seemed like a good investmetn.

great story -- and like all good stories the mental picture is the best part.
once I bounced a softball size rock off a 14 foot gator's nose. he twitched like you might at a mosquito. unbelievable. his head was as wide as a volkswagen.
Really cool!

awsome shot, been through there a thousand times, looks to be a little west of Hog Island.
I don't remember... I was trying to get to the bridge before sunset but was too far away, so I took that pic ....to have something for the trip !
do these grow up there ?
They do but I couldn't tell you what they are, don't look like morels to me but then I'm no expert on morals either. How bout a king sized sno mushroom.
...........they are shaggy manes, not morels.....my goof.......I never saw anything that weird, what could do that ?
Actually pretty common along Lake Superior. The snow swirls around the stumps and forms a kind of vortex effect forcing grains of snow to stick around the stump top and gradually build a round cap. In areas of logging activity there are dozens of them in clusters, looks like something out of a cartoon. What's really odd is every storm adds to the last one's handy work and by spring some of the caps are 6 feet in dia. Depending on the wind velocity a stump cap can grow from nothing to 2 feet over night although in most cases it more subtle than that.a close up pic.

I'm betting you're a busy man! Good looking crew you all make. Buncha lady killers.

Cool looking place, love all that second floor glass. I have been to Duluth many times, beautiful granite rock country hope to get out this summer and run the Bois Brule.
Where are you from, Riverman?
are you a paddler? my brother is a white water paddler, always up there on the rivers... canada... anywhere there are rapids... he'll go
Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I do whitewater during the spring runoff, flat water during the summer when there is enough water and lake Superior shoreline whenever I can. Also Lake surfing however Lake Superior is usually so cold the season is pretty limited to a couple runs a summer. If your brother does whitewater in Canada he's probably better at it than I am. Class three is about my limit and that's a stretch.Photo of my wife getting ready to run a 3 foot drop towards the end of the season during a strong class 2+. A friend of mine and I did this same run 3 weeks earlier during flood stage as it churned out an unsuspecting class 4, just about finished us off, put new meaning into the word dumbsh*t.. Lots of stuff up here but most of it is out of my league.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out. Hopefully we will get a ton of snow this winter so we can have an extended season come spring. 2003 we ran from mid april until june 19. Last year we ran from mid april, by the first week in may it was done.

LOL. I don't think you can even buy sixpacks up north.
I think you can but they have a huge plastic ring thing that fits over six kegs
ya don't need much of a deck when it's gonna be snow covered for 7 months of the year and bug infested for the other 5.

That s a cool picture but where is all your snow?
but where is all your snow? It's there Don, it's called a dark out, the opposite of a white out.
view from a penthouse I did a little work in last week. thats the St. Johns river looking south
That is one beautiful shot of a sunrise!

Digging through some old files, found this. One really calm day, lake superior east of Munising mid May. Lake Superior waters are cold and clear, it's not uncommon to see down 50 ft. The season between the black flies and the ice is about as good as it gets.
That is surreal. Nice shot!
Spring run off provides plenty of excitment around here. Took a group of friends on their first whitewater run last weekend, all did well considering how fast the water was. Did a demo on a technical sideway slide into a small drop.
Very cool!
Im curious where you stayed while you built ot ? Commute or a travel trailer?
Tent?
Tim
We converted a 10x12 shed into a "Unibomber Cabin" (now a bunk house) and stayed there and with neighbors. The building is uninsulated (except for 2" of foam in the roof) and used only may thru Oct.It's 70 Minutes from home.Ted
We remodeled and built on to a house with out plumbing . Sould have done what you did . Been less trouble .
We parked a camper trailer on site and kept it hooked up to water and electric. Took forever it seemed over weekends. I got tired of it before we got in. <G> Bet you did too as its a lot of work hauling tools and stuff back and forth for two days off.
Tim
a little while ago, still dark !!...... sorry about the quality, they always manage to be in silhouette
How much zoom do you have ? Looks like you brought the last picture right up to you.
Tim
the little guy was only 25' away..... and the zoom is 20X ...I can't understand why this crummy camera takes such lousy still shots......I never owned an AF type until this thing, which we picked up for these kind of quick snaps, I guess I should read the book, as I am constantly adjusting the shot, but the focus is junk
Maddog,
I never heard of ANY camera with more than 10x OPTICAL zoom. Most of the good, lower level, cameras have 3x OPTICAL zoom and then all sorts of DIGITAL zoom above that. If you spend a good bit more money, you can get the 10x optical lens.
Optical zoom is a function of the lens of the camera and there are really no bad ones, they all will be sharp and in focus. Digital zoom, however, is just a way of zooming which makes the pixels in the picture larger and larger, with degrading quality as the closeness goes u -- looks like "out of focus". This is exactly like taking a 3x5 photo and blowing it up to 14x17 - with a commensurate loss of quality.
If you are getting poor "focusing" with 20x, try backing down to what the camera says is the limit of its optical zoom.
Another possibility is that you are set to "manual focus" when you think you are using "auto focus". Check your camera's menu to see what the default focusing method is when you turn on the camera. Reset this to AF if it is on MF. (My Minolta is easy to switch without wanting to - the MF button is right above the button that turns on and off the display).
Barker
That makes sense now. I get better pictures with the zoom lens and stopped using the digital after the loss of quality became apparent. I thought the camera just didn't work right.
Hello barker.....and welcome......I'll dig out the book and look thru it......but I must say that the 20X zoom is optical ..its printed right along the viewfinder.......I'll let you know.
maddog3
Maddog,
I am sure that you have a very good camera, then. And probably one with which to use the admonition:
"when all else fails, read the instructions"
Barker
thank you ,but I just don't think the camera is all that the literature says it is......where are my manners............Welcome to Breaktime, and thanks again for your help
It's pretty rare to see open water on Lake Superior this time of year. Grand Island is a large sandstone island about 1 1/2 miles off shore in Munising Bay. Sunday had partly sunny skies and a slight south wind so I decided to run my kayak over, check out the ice curtains and do a photo shoot. Getting in the water is never a problem since it's usually pretty easy to seal launch right off the shore ice ledge. Getting back out is a different story, some serious foresight is required unless you don't mind going for a swim amongst the ice cubes. What gets me most about winter kayaking is the silence. No motor boats, no obnoxious jet skis, no sound other than your paddle slapping time.

Cool fotos!!!!
How do seals unlaunch themselves?
What was the air temp?
Cool ride man.
Tim
Air temp was about 28 degrees, with a slight breeze. Once I got going I warmed up pretty fast. Lake kayaking takes a fair amount of effort and the bottom half of your body is sealed in the cockpit with with a nylon spray skirt so it has to get really cold before you start to feel uncomfortable. Glacier gloves or skin diver gloves keep the hands warm enough down to about 25 degrees. Colder than that and it takes another layer call pogies,or mombas, a mitten like glove that velcro's around the paddle handle into which you slide a gloved hand, that takes you down to the "you shudda stayed home temp". Taking photos is a chore since you really can't do it without taking the gloves off, then where do you put them, then the boat drifts and the paddle want's to slide off the deck and you still have to get the camera out of the sealed case. My first trip out I was glad I didn't have an audience.
Neat pics. Do you have a larger version of pic1? I need to replace Calvin's lock pic on my desktop.

Antartica; Southern Lights.C-17 takeoff in and ice storm.McMurdo Base, ross ice shelfThe interesting thing about Antartica is it is so dry it never snows. The white stuff is ice crystals that just blow around, stings like sand and piles up like sand dunes.
Dave operates the snow equipment used to maintain the runways as well as takes the scientists out on their expiditions. Some of the storage shed are portable so they can be skidded around as needed.

If I get a chance I'll try to post some of my photos , if I can find them and try not to bore the folks that have heard some of the stories or seen the pics before.
Attached ( I think) is a pic that makes me cold. Got it from a VXE6 website. A initiation I think. Not the kind I had though.

I'm guessing the C17 photo was taken early in the season, August- Sept (Late winter/ early spring > during the inial fly in, probably -50 or colder, so after being exposed to that for a while +20F is summer. This time of year if we could find a wind sheltered place +20F was take off the shirt and catch some rays. That being said, weather there can change really fast.
For all of it beauty, an almost magnificent desolation, it can be very dangerous and unforgiving of mistakes.
Quite a few of the hills around McMurdo had crosses on them. Story has it that one guy of a winter over party could't take the isolation and just left McMurdo and kept walking till he froze. Myself and another guy were in the radar shop when another guy came in while brushing his teeth, didn't say anything, sat in the knee hole of the shop bench, brushed his teeth for about 20min, got up and left while still brushing his teeth, he needed off of the ice. We lost 2 planes that year at a remote site, the first when a jato bottle broke from its mount during takeoff and went thru the wing, the second was rescueing the first crew, was taking off, the hydraulics failed. the front ski drooped and dug into the snow, not a good thing at any speed.
But were else can you go were few people have gone, be an explorer on an almost pristine continent, and probably for the most part, doing or supporting scientific research that hopefully benefits the planet and your fellow man._
Yeah, I'd go back given the opportunity

I've always been awestruck by equipment......the C-17 will be the picture I will look at the most.
Is that what this sucker is? Must be a newer plane, thought I could recognize all the old ones.

was that shot taken in NJ.? I spent a few ....days.... at Ft. Dix and the freighters were low enough to see the tire treads when they were landing..of course I had a helmet on so it was probably safe
with all of my cryin in my beer at the Tavern aboutt Nikon and film....I thought I would make some copies of old SLIDES, kinda like taking the old horse out for one last ride ......well it ain't too hard .if the slides are good exposures....
ooooops, sorry about that,
was that shot taken in NJ.?
Airshow in IL last spring. Interesting to walk through them, but I think the Galaxy I walked through in the... hmm... late 80's? was the most cavernous plane I've ever seen (although I understand the Russians have one larger).

Yesterday my dog, Ester, learned a new trick...she brings me tennisballs everyday...but this was a first--too funny!
Yup Ester knows how to get your attention. I love dogs, we have two, a German Shephard and Husky mix. Ms. Morgan likes clutch balls, every time someone comes over she hauls one out hoping someone plays with her. Molly, the husky, likes tennis balls and won't play with anything else.
Nice.I'm glad my dog goes for tennis balls...if I taught her to fetch sticks, I know she would drag chunks of birdseye maple off the lumber rack.
"I know she would drag chunks of birdseye maple off the lumber rack."Then you should take her into the woods so that she could bring back birdseye maple from there. Birdseye hound? Got the beginnings of a new breed.
Took the dog to church this morning. Perfect morning for a walk in the woods. On the way home we stopped by the Jim Beam distillery to take a picture of the post office there. Nice little country post office with the distillery in the background.

so you're only motivation was the post office hunh?
Well you know. Sometimes I like to go over to the distillery and wave at the barrels as they age. Give em a little pep talk. "See ya in seven years little buddy." That kind of stuff.
Wake me up before you go-go.
Nice pics. That's quite a departure from your usual file of assorted flotsam & jetsam.
Don't worry I have plenty of the good ones.

This was on the way home. Guess it should go in the other thread.
You live in good billboard country. You don't see those here.

I really wanted to get last months, it was even racier. I sometimes feel like I live in a magazine.
Lawyers and Bourbon ads. That's the majority of the billboards here.

Does this look familiar?
Heck yea! That's the place alright. Doesn't look any different then it did in the late 70's. Thanks a bunch.
To anyone that doesn't know. When I was a Sophmore in High school we lived in that house for a year while my dad was a project manager on the rehabilitation of the LIRR. It's just outside of East Hampton New York.
P.S. sorry it took so long to respond I've been out of town. Way cool.

This spring a buddy came up and I took him on a tour of the sights. Received the photos yesterday.Photo 1 is chapel rock in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan. The lone pine sits on top of a wind and water sculpted rock formation on the edge of Lake Superior. The white pine tree has a set of huge roots attached to the mainland, you can see them on the left side of the photo.
In the grand scale of things the tree is about 2 ft. at the base and a major recognizable landmark.Photo 2 is Miners Castle at sunset. A sandstone formation that resembles the turrets of a castle. Late in the spring one of the turrets collapsed and tumbled into the lake. Fortunately no one was in the way when it happened.
heres a pic or two of an outdoor poolside bar I finished recently
there is mirror behind the mahogany now (which is why i had to fuss over the back side of those pilasters) fun job and a bit of a challenge to make it as weather proof as possible. (although it is covered it is on the intercoastal -- salt air)
Pete
That looks good, got a pic of the whole thing?
Doug
thanks, I'll take a couple nice ones when I go get my final check
hes added a nice green stone to the back bar countertop
and the mirror behind so it ought to be looking pretty good. I'm looking forward to seeing it myself
Pretty darn nice I might add.
thanks riv. means a lot comin from you
Real nice.
What did you use for a finish? In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey.
thanks,
I sprayed spar polyurethane with an automotive type cup gun. (devilbiss jge) about six or seven coats, thinned only with a bit of penetrol.
i spray it thick but at high pressure
it can be a bitch if it decides to sag on you, but only had a couple minor issues with that, and after a few days when its hard enough you can scrape and sand out any imperfections.
check out these photos of the Boundry Waters Minnesota forest fire.Pretty incredible photos of fire in action.http://www.boreal.org/fireinfo/Cavity_Lake_Fire/photo_gallery.html
I was talking to a guy a month ago that had just gotten back from canoing the boundry waters. He loved it. What a shame.
Tipi fest 06. Get hip.
It's a big place, about a million acres. I have never been there but it's been on my list forever. You wouldn't think a place surrounded with that much water could burn. Islands totally surrounded by water torched by lightning. We are about 400 miles away as the crow flies and able to to smell the smoke. Two summers ago I was out on Lake Superior, it's the widest part of the lake, 125 miles to Canada. First it looked like fog moving in then the smoke became thick enough to choke you, sureal to beat all. Felt like the lake was going to burst into flames any second.
Boundry waters, just love it. Took my senior trip in high school there, everybody else went to the Bahamas. Usually set camp on the islands so as not to have to deal with the bears.Been back a number of times since, is on my list to go again.
Nice looing finish, you ever try using conversion varnish. Three coats and it looks like the finish is a half inch deep, no risk of runs either.
Has a slight learning curve to it but if you can spray poly you can spray anything.
Rapid River. A mid summer rain storm brought the water up enough to make an attempt at running a series of drops. Photo of Mike as he approaches the middle drop. Unfortunately the water was still pretty shallow and made it near impossible to steer into the main channel. He did manage the drop without going swimming however he was about as graceful as a carp flopping over dry land. I didn't do a whole lot better other than finding a bit more water slightly to the right of where Mike went over. All in all good for a few laughs.
Armin, we took our Coleman canoes up to the New River (VA/WVA border) last weekend. 2nd oldest river in the world, and it flows North. It was way low. Mrs 'Snort had never been in a canoe before, and had been promised no rapids...around the first bend, we hit a 2' drop...good thing she couldn't get up those cliffs! What made matters worse was every time we'd hit any fast water, I'd accidentaly hook a smallmouth bass...it is really hard to paddle and reel in a pizzed off fish<G>It's so cool the way those canoes can bounce... I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
Canoes have the advantage during low water since you can jump out and pull over low spots with out any major effort. I hear the New River is a cool place. Mike, my kayaker buddy from my last post has been there, took a guided raft trip during high water. According to the American Whitewater guide it has some class five + drops, pretty much out of my league. For anyone interested here is a link to some action photos http://www.americanwhitewater.org/rivers/id/2418#rapid4(Photos toward the end of the page)

So where you at, doode? Yep Eggleston up to Castle Rocks...we're not really big canoers, but some good friends forced us into this...we had a blast...great fishingSo, how do ya fix that groundhog?<G> I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
Out running the storm.Finished a project in Marquette Mi. about 50 miles west of where I live. Loaded my tools in the truck and noticed a front moving in from the west. Since I had 50 miles of open road with no stops I figured I had plenty of time to get home before it hit. About half way home I realized the front was gaining on me and at 60 mph I was not going to out run it. Took it up to 65, about as fast as you want to go through small town cop country. Smoked it into my yard, ran in the house and ushered the dogs into the basement, grabbed the camera and took these shots.
Geeze, was there a face and a loud BOOMING voice accompanying it?

According to a NOAA poster, the clouds are called a mix of Mammatus and Wave Clouds. The erie part was the blast of wind that followed. One 50 mph gust lasted all of 15 seconds then a ton of rain. Seeing it from the relative safty of a building is bad enough. I wouldn't want to be on the big lake and see them coming at you full bore.
>>I wouldn't want to be on the big lake and see them coming at you full bore.Been there, done that, got the soiled undies - late 1990's Queen's Cup race, literally in the middle of Lake MI on my uncle's 35' sailboat at 4 in the morning, and we got pasted. Pushed us over to probably 75º, cabintop windows were submerged (I was down below trying to wake up and get my foulies on, so I had a rather scary view of this happening) and water filled the cockpit. Once it blew past, though, we had 4 hours of the best sailing ever, spinnaker up and blasting through the waves at 8-9 knots.did<!---->Cure Diabetes - Death Valley 2006!<!---->

Thanks Steve, I take it that's not you in the photo. Biggest drop I did was 5 ft. and that was by mistake. My buddy on shore said when I went over my eyes were as big as saucers and I uttered a few unspeakable phrases.
No. That isnt me. Id never do a thing like that. That is my brother. He's and action guy. I'll stick to the flat water.
When the gales of November come early. November 10, 1975 the night the Ore carrier SS. Edmund Fitzgerald went down off Whitefish Point, Lake Superior. The records showed gale force winds and wave heights 12 to 18 ft.
Big storm rolled in today with gale force winds increasing during the night, waves 20 to 25 ft. expected. It looks like the makings of a new record setter, hopefully all boats have found safe harbor.

You can hear the surf over a mile away, pretty impressive show of force. Planning a hike into the park tomorrow morning to check out the full scale action along the cliffs.
You weren't tempted to do just a littel kayaking in that?
http://www.hay98.com/
The only time I would consider kayaking in those conditions would be if my girlfriend left and my wife divorced me. When it comes to lake surfing the chicken in me takes over when the waves exceed 5 ft.
Photo below shows a slightly miss timed landing View Image
I can understand the five foot rule. Heck. I could understand a one foot rule.
http://www.hay98.com/
I'm pretty green and wet behind the ears when it comes to kayak surfing. Just finished my second season and like most things in order to become good at it you need lots practice. Good safe conditions are rare so if I'm lucky I get to go two or three times a season. I go more for the experience so I don't panic in case I get trapped in unexpected bad conditions on a normal run. Although I do believe playing just off shore with a support team on dry land generates a much lower anxiety factor than being 3 miles out and watching the breakers pound the cliffs.<!----><!----><!---->
Some photos below from last summers run. After a storm is the best time to go as the waves are no longer wind driven and pretty predictable as to speed and height. These are 10 seconds apart in the 4 ft range with a clean turn zone about 300 yards off shore. Unless the photographer is in a boat anchored out in the surf it's near impossible to get a good action shot. My wife took these pic's from shore.
<!----><!----><!---->
Since the paddler is low in the water the waves can be quite intimidating, the key is to paddle with as much forward thrust as possible cutting into the wave to avoid being tossed backward like a piece of driftwood. Depending on what stage the wave is in determines whether you slice through it like a submarine or climb over the top and break into the open air. In its best form most of your boat is airborne as you exit the wave on the far side and skate down the backside of the wave. Entering the wave just as it breaks into foam is enough to make you wonder if golf wouldn't be a better sport to take up. Three to four footers don't seem to matter much as you are only buried in the wave up to your elbows, the 5 and up crowd puts you totally under the water. I don't know how to describe it other than it's a cross between this is really awesome and I wanna go home now. I avoid the 5 and up range however even the normal surf will kick up a wild set now and then, usually in groups of three, hence sailors refer to them as the three sisters. The key is not to panic, as you will exit out the far side in a second or two. Happy paddlers pick seaweed out of their teeth so it's best to hold your breath and keep your mouth shut.
