Installed a beautiful custom made steel door with side lites for
my brother last week. Nicely pre – finished and painted. Door went in perfect, level and plumb.
The door came with 3 lengths of wood brick mold, and a vinyl finish cap moulding to go over the wood brick mold to match the door color. So I figured I’d put the cap over the wood mold, mitre cut the pieces together to fit, and pre drill for finish nails, fill the nail heads, and touch up with supplied touch up paint.
The very first nail shattered the vinyl casing of the molding (too cold out here in Toronto???) So, question is did I install this trim totally wrong?
Should I have nailed the wood mold first, and then glue in the vinyl cap to finish? (seems to me the vinyl cap wouldnt fit over the mould once the wood mould was in place) or, just glue up the assembly with out nailing anything off? Of course the door company wont tell me proceedure????
Other option I guess is to install wood brick mold and paint to match.
Any thoughs from you door hangers?

I'm not real familiar with the vinyl cap for the brickmold, but I would think it should just snap over the wood, maybe with a little construction adhesive to hold it.
I've started using Azek PVC brickmolding on the doors I install. Won't rot; holds paint very well; and once the miters are glued with the Azek cement, there are no joints in the trim for water to penetrate.
Not clear: Is the vinyl a drip cap, or a "shell" to cover the wood molding. If the former, throw it away and use a metal drip cap. Vinyl drip cap is worthless.
I'm guessing the OP was talking about a shell that covers the wood.
If he wasn't talking about that, my post makes no sense <G>
Yes, its a snap on type vinyl molding that covers the wood brick mold.
I'd be concerned about the life span of that wood trim.
Wrapped in vinyl, it has little chance to air out and dry when water gets in.
Perfect conditions for mold, fungus, and rot.
The snap on feature is to hide the nails in the brick mold and protect it from weathering. It is an attempt at cladding a door, like windows.
I have seen it, but never used it.
Don't know why a vinyl cap over wood brick mold would cause rot or mold any faster than wrapping it with alum would. I've done tons of those over the past 35 years. I can't remember any call backs for rotted brick mold that was due to the alum wrap.
Poor HO maintenance yes, but wrapping alone,.. not in my experience.
