I am entertaining estimates for repair/reconstruction of a set of brick and flagstone outdoor steps. Can anyone tell me what is a fair and reasonable hourly wage for an experienced and skilled bricklayer?

Hiring a Bricklayer to work for an hourly wage is different than hiring a Bricklaying Contractor to solve your problem (independent solo contractor or otherwise). What is "fair and reasonable" is not really the question. The "real" question is what is it really worth to you to have it done and done correctly. I just came in from shopping. I was looking for a bath rug for one of my bathroom floors. I thought $48 was too expensive (not worth it) so I held off for now. However I also went to the bookstore to pick up a book I had ordered for $69. I have lots of friends who wouldn't dream of ever spending $69 on just a book (small book too).
I'll ask about it tomorrow but then again I'm in Westchester County NY so what ever I find out would be out of sight if your in Houston Texas.
Sorry to be so vague but it all depends.

Depends. Are you going to buy his beer or is he to provide it himself?

Okay, after asking around today, for Westchester County NY. You might be able to find a out-of-work bricklayer or one who will do a small job on the side for maybe $20 to $35 per hour but a genuinne independent contractor or contractor period will run you $45 to $85.
I should tell you though from the conversation at lunch time it was decided that "out-of-work bricklayer" is an oxymoron. Good luck.
