Inspired by Stilletto’s tool trade idea and the deal Dockelly and I are working on currently, I thought I would throw this out. Hope Doc doesn’t mind.
We’re talking about trading the installation of a roof system on his beach house (with a brand new foundation) in trade for some vaction time at said beach house. The highlight of the deal, though, is we will work together on the project. I think we’ll have a blast. So far, my only regret about meeting other BTers is that I’ve not gotten to spend enough time with any of the ones I’ve met. On the other hand, I’ve consciously ducked a couple of them.
Anyway, this seems like a great concept to me. There’s lots of possible combinations out there, due to the imense pool of talent and creativity here. I’m currently fascinated with Waters’ concrete counter tops and Mcdesign’s bridge. I don’t need anything right now, but I will in the future. This could also work out as 3 or 4 way trades, just like sports teams. Let’s get creative and build this community further. Whatcha got? Whatcha want?

I look forward to you coming out here. I've had talked to dedubya a while ago about getting together at his place for some work he thought of having done. He's talked about coming out here to look at my old fireplaces/chimneys. Kind of sad to have 5 fireplaces in one house and all of them closed off. (Don't tell him, but I've got three new foundations and a couple repair jobs needing done soon. I was gonna just show up and hijack him, but I think his wife is sweet and would miss him.)
Can't say that I've fallen madly in love with every BTer that I've met, but overall the experiences have been enjoyable. Even down in Laurel when we were doing the church renovation, we got along pretty well for the most part.
I am interested if anybody's in the VA/NC area.

Heck no. Not at all.I think that is the one complaint most people have about the fests. They are over before you have a chance to actually talk to everyone you wanted to talk to."Mingle circles" seem to be ever changing. And have lives of their own, like traffic on main highways seems to be a thing alive...I saw a chance, a couple times, but felt it would be rude of me to just walk away from the current mingle circle, and go have a talk with you. And a few others, as well.Of course, I guess that no matter what you do, you end up looking rude, to someone.=0/

How about Joe Bologna's?
Probably the best pizza in town. I haven't been in there for while. Parking's tight when school is in session. It's a block away from most of the UK classrooms so every public parking spot is full during the day. Gunner's usually pulling a trailer, so we try to find someplace within walking distance or at least a short drive from where he's working if I pick him and his partner up. Time kinda limits where we can go. Good suggestion, though.
A buddy of mine started that brewery (it was across the street from my old shop 12-13 years ago). He sold out after a few years, but I used to get a 6 pack or so a week free. I hardly ever see it in the stores around here any more. I'd kinda forgotten about it. I'll have to seek some out.

IIRC the Bourbon Barrel Ale is only available at the brewery. A little costly at $2.50 a bottle. Good for sipping, though.
I think my wife picked up some Ale and Light at Krogers. So those should be readily available.
One of the owners at the brewery said that they were in the process of getting Kentucky Ale into Ohio. Looking forward to that.
We stayed e few nights at the Embassy Suites. One night they had their manager's reception in the bar, and we were able to get Kentucky Ale that night. A step up from Bud Light!!"Objects in mirror appear closer than they are."

Right now, we don't have any plans on stopping in Lexington.
We are heading to western Kentucky about the second week in June for our yearly family time away from home.
My wife wants to be out of town on June 13 every year. But, that's another story.
We may be passing through Lexington on our way to our cabin at one of the state parks. If we are able, we will stop at the brewery to pick up some Burbon Barrel Ale.

I'm in for a 3 way. A 4 way sounds a bit too kinky for my taste, though.
DocKelly's in Jersey IIRC, so if you want an extra hand there, just shout. That's an easy enough drive from here. Otherwise I'm always up for trading some web services or grunt work on my part. What's that saying...young, dumb and full of tools? LOL
Actually, I'm somewhat surprised that there's not more of an Amish barn raising element for the fests. That'd be a nice way of paying off the host for all the beer cans in the bushes. Surely there's plenty of talent to take on a small project or at least get it going. And it'd be a lasting tribute. Perhaps you'd wind up with too many admirals per canoe?

The problem with trying to get anything done during a fest is there's too much fun to be had hanging out with most of these cats and kittens. Working on something would interfere with that. My sides have hurt driving home from the last three fests from laughing so much and this is shaping up to be a large and amusing crew. It's tough to get to visit with all the people you want to when they get heavily populated. You'll see.
We'll certainly discuss a three way. Sometime in May is the target date.

Do you know of a turner named Michael Mode? He was local to me in Pa, then moved to Vt. I think...man that dude was good.

Yeah, I met him years ago at an AAW symposium. Not that he'd remember me. I was just another face in the crowd.
Shep,Love to have you there. I actually thought of contacting you to see if you would be interested in trading skills for time at the house. I'm 1/2 way through doing the deck, was thinking of wrapping the PT posts in something prior to railing, and than putting up rails. Also some interior wainscoting once new sheetrock is done, you interested in any of this? I'll give you two weeks in December, hell, make it three:)
If you want to go to the Fest, we can car pool. I'd recommend getting your own accomodations, tho, since I snore like a freight train.
Where's your house again? I'm up for working something out.
Any exchangers would have running water for their visit. Won't they? Or will it be a rustic experience. LOL
Not sure about the fest yet, tought about car pooling also. I have a F250 crew cab, fit 6 men. If I was to go, I'd see if any others need a ride.
My House is in Surf City, LBI. Course it has running water, tide comes and goes twice a day.
I have a GMC 3500 passenger van that seats 8, but if there's only 2 of us I'd take my Mustang.
Better mileage, and more fun to drive.
Need any help breaking that Mustang in, Shep?I'll eat your peaches, mam. I LOVE peaches!
Jim-
I picked up the car on Oct. 30, last year. I just passed 3,000 miles this week. At this rate, it's gonna be an antique before I hit 100,000 miles.
I'd drive it more, but there's this thing that continues to take up a lot of my time, called work.
I was thinking (if I go and it's just you and me), of taking my 300 zx, 1991. Only two seats, bought it new and have about 60,000 miles 17 years later. Not much use for carrying anything other than golfclubs, but real fun to drive. Probably more room in your mustang.

Yo brotha man, how are you?I've been working hard to cross the finish line.I made it.Now life is good.
"Finish line"? You retire from the airlines or something? What the heck you talking about "finish line"?
Holy smokes, man, you've been scarce around here the past couple years. Good to see you. Tiling a shower in a basement last I remember...what the heck are you doing now?I'll eat your peaches, mam. I LOVE peaches!
Been pushing real hard for a couple of years, I got plenty tired.Had a surreal, semi life changing event happen a couple years ago. Nothing I'll mention here. But it was one of those "sit back and reflect" moments, you know? Take stock. Figure things out. Kiss the wife and hug the kids. So...I sold the construction company to my underlings.About 6 years ago I started a software/consulting company. Sold last year to a left-coast software company. Halla-frickin-luya. That was "the finish line". Trust me, 'tis better to work in a shop filled with sawdust than a cubicle filled with post-it notes.Tonight? My wife mixed me a big gin and tonic. And I'm a beer man. But I still liked it plenty fine.Been working real hard, now the hard work is over and I'm trying to get used to slow down mode.I refuse to give up the flying, as that's what I've wanted to do since I was a kid, you know? That's how I perceive myself. I don't want to be "retired". But a couple days a month flying? I can do that. This will sound silly, but I'm trying to figure out what's next. Honestly, I'm pretty content. I'd like to slide sideways for a few years and have "nothing" next. Just decompress.20+ years married and I'm still crazy in love with my wife.I love my kids. Got a collij road trip with my daughter (high school senior) next week, a Boston/Montreal/NY campus visitation trip. She's a finer daughter than I deserve. Life is good.I've been reading the forums, a lot of lurking, but yeah, my posting has been scarce.Yup, that "Kerdi Shower" thread I put in the Gallery a couple years ago was my last big thread. Overall, no complaints! Except I need to golf more. And take more pics. You're a film man, I'm getting deeper and deeper into digital.I wish you and the missus well, and I mean that.Best, Mongo

Hey Doc,
Long time no talk. I missed the Joisey Mini fest, and was one of those azzes that did not even let Shep know what happened. For the record, I was offered job to re-design a house in VT, and that weekend was the only time the owner could meet me there.......long story short, I owe youse guys at least one round of good beer.
Have done quite a bit of work in Manasquan lately.
What zactly you need help doing to your house in Surf City? It's only a 30-40 min ride from my pad.
Been there once (friend of a friend has a house there), nice area.....great liquor stores.
Steve
Hey Pickings,
Good to hear from you! I need alot of things done, some can wait until the fall, but I'll do this spring if I can. I need to rip up the floor inside the house, level the fill and pour a slab, install subfloor and oak flooring, landscape, scrape and paint house, install central air and heat, replace the neoangle shower with a base and tile walls, build the outside shower, and a utility type room for the heat and ac, etc, etc. More of a wishlist really, the essentials will be done soon so we can use the house this summer.
Kevin
Wow.....
Yose got yerself a longer "honey-do" list than most guys I know.
Have you considered knocking it down and starting over;-)
the essentials will be done soon so we can use the house this summer.
I guess you mean floors, shower, ac etc?
Might have a day or two comming up, will know better after some meetings this comming week.
I should have knocked it down, but i fell in love with the place and now i'm in to deep. i'll finish it.
Just finished two knockdowns/redo from foundation up in Manasquan. Gots three more on the board for the fall.......so knockdowns are fresh on the mind.
Personally, if the house is cute enough, and structually sound, I would rather fix them up too.
Problem I find w/ most of those shore cottages is that they were originally built as temperory summer places. Most of the foundations I have seen down there are at best barely holding their own, and at worse, crumbled.......don't know if LBI is like that.
If you want, you can email me your address down there. I'll be happy to stop on down, take a look see, give you my 2 cents, and see if I can plan out some time to give you a hand.
i'll send you an email, my foundation was nothing to speak of, couple of concrete blocks set on top of each other, no mortar, spaced about 8 feet apart. that's why we lifted it and poured footing and wall. I'll attach a few pics with my email. On second thought, answer my email with one of your own so I get your address and I'll just resend an email I sent yesterday with all pics attached already.
Nothing here as of now. I just set up my new email, not sure if it works yet. Please resend.
Thanks
Hey, Kevin-
I made it back from my golf trip to AC in one piece. My playing kinda socked, but we had fun anyway. Friday was great weather, but Sat. and Sun. were cold and windy, not my favorite playing conditions. LOL I did win the long drive contest on Saturday, so it wasn't all bad.
I drove by your house when I was down on LBI last Wednesday. It looks a lot like my own house- a lot of partially finished projects <G>. I noticed there was a historic plaque on the front. How old is the house? Is that why you have to jump thru hoops to get things done there?
I'm going to be on LBI on and off for a while. I'll let you know when I'll be there, and maybe we can hook up.
Hey Shep,Did your wife tell you I was worried something happened to you? Last I heard from you, you were going to run by my house, than nothing for days. I was thinking you ran into Luka along the way and something terrible happened:) To bad about the golf, even bad play and bad conditions beats most everything else.House is 120 yo, plaque was in recognition of the restoration done 20 some years ago. It is historic in the sense that it's old, not like anyone historic slept there. I think the troubles I've had are due in part to my inexperience, and a BI whose a stickler for the small stuff, he's been a big help in alot of ways, so I can't really complain about my experience with them overall.

This could also work out as 3 or 4 way trades, just like sports teams. Let's get creative and build this community further. Whatcha got? Whatcha want?"
I've had a few thoughts along these lines too. This seems like a great way to get to meet and work with other BT tradesmen, at least for a couple of days.
I'd really enjoy learning from many of those whose work I've seen here. For example, I'm a half-azzed tile setter, mainly because I've never been around anyone who does that work skillfully. Plumbing and electrical work too. I imagine that many others here are in a similar position.
I'm in metro Detroit. I'd be happy to work with any of you guys (and girls).
Hmm, A Sprinter full of my tools, a place in it to sleep and stay dry.
I would probably be happy to just set off cross country stopping and helping with whatever my old body and mind is capable of doing.
Feed me , give me gas money to make the next port of call and I be good.
Imerc made a run like that

Hey Grant,
All BS aside I had the same idea but wanted to talk to you first, didn't want to step on any toes.
I've actually been thinking beyond just bartering, like maybe getting group health insurance , better deals on credit cards, discount travel, etc. Even building material we get over the internet might be discounted if we somehow identify ourselves as BT'ers. Met Bob at Manasquan fasteners, supplier of SS simpson connectors, nails, screws etc and thought of pitching the idea to him. There's obviously an interest in the barter idea given the number of responses since your post.
On another note, I might just show up at this fest to see what all the fuss is about. You going?

Sounds like a great idea if someone can get it off the ground.

Hell, I drove 15 hours straight each way to spend 2 days with these yahoos the last two years. It's only 4 hours away this year. Wouldn't think of missing it. Write it in your calender. I've got a sneaky suspiscion that Doud knows how to pitch a Wang Dang Doodle to steal Howlin' Wolf's phrase.

But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
So you're gonna have to figure out how to make an 11 hour detour on the way to Doud's.
You and Gunner could always make a few BTers kidnapping passes. Pick up the ones who say they don't want to go. Get their sorry butts to the fest.
We might make a slight detour, but Fatroman's hoping in the van after driving from Va, so we don't want to kill him.
edit: but then again, he is an Ironman.
