Bubbling toilet
Last night our sleep was disturbed by a loud bubbling toilet. It bubbled once and woke us up, I went in and looked at it. It started to bubble again, then about half the water drained. We have a septic system and have had no problems what so ever with drainage. The was no smell after the bubbling so I do not think it came from the septic tank. Any thoughts about what’s happening, I do not have a clue.

Was It really windy? maybe you where sucking a vacuum (sp) through your stack vent on the roof. just a thought.

*No, it was a calm 60 degree night. good thought though.Bob W [FL]
*The septic kinda rules out rats, but my brother had a similar phenomenon due to a rat coming and going via the toilet to get at the cat's food, finally caught and dispatched it. Have not heard of rats being able to live in septic system, maybe somebody knows otherwise?
*Additional info. After speaking with my son, his toilet and tub did the same thing at the other end of the house.
*Still sounds like a venting problem creating a suction in the traps. Otherwise, plumbing is pretty static when not moving water or waste.
*You could have back siphoning . Are you using anti siphon ballcocks?
*It is strange that the same symptoms occurred at the same time at widely separated locations and separate vents.I've seen suctioning when the waste line to the septic tank has backed up past the vent junction point and then as it drained it pulled the water from the bowl before the level of the water reached the point where the vent was once again clear. This could occur if there was a massive influx of waste water from a long bath or shower and simultaneous flushing of the toilets AND the outflow from the tank to the field was suddenly overwhelmed. This could indicate a momentary outflow blockage (a floater mass breaking loose) or problems with the field or distribution system. The septic tank is also not immune to internal disintergration which could cause more problems.Have your son start taking Navy showers and have your septic tank pumped and inspected. Depending on the age of your system you could have an old shell bed field on its last legs (just what you wanted to hear, right?)
*we had this happen to us. The cause turned out to be pretty serious. Our tank was full - the pump circuit failed (pump was ok, break in the wire...). yikes. what happened to the alarm? you might ask. well some one (we speculate a baby sitter) turned it off. Phil [email protected]
*related question - what's the best way to go about replacing a dead septic system?
*maybe thats your ghost that took sh*t in your toliet,, and its bubble,,,,
*Happens to me for a few weeks each spring, but only when the groundwater table is extremely high. This is what I think causes it. When flushing, normally the air pressure in front of the column of water dissipates into the septic system and gravel. When the water table is very high the air has no place to go and bubbles back in the direction of least resistance. Like your situation, there is no odor associated with this bubbling.
