I just got back from JLC Live in Columbus, Ohio. I came back with invaluable information, tools, free stuff, and a new excitement for customized building. Was anybody else there? and does anybody know of any other conventions going on anywhere? (esp. east coast) THANKS

Enjoyed and learned.
Remodelers Show by the same folks in Baltimore I think. I'm not sure of the content. What was good about Live were the demo's and seminars in addition to the product/tool fair.

I have to admit having a certain amount of pleasure upon reading your comments.
Cal I was there roaming the floor on friday . I looked for you but didn't see you. I thought after I finished dealing with my uh "customers" we could go over to Dougs for another beer. Him not being there means more for us.
Mike I saw you scamper for a minute or 2 but was running out of time. It wasn't my cell phone ringing. really it wasn't. Great show. I was at the one in Baltimore last year & liked that one too.
It was good to meet the two of you. Offer still stands if you're in the neighborhood. Usually a couple of cold ones in the fridge.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

I was there in one of those funny blue and gold shirts with a headset mic on. Glad you liked the show. What did you learn? A lot of FHB regular authors work the JLC shows. Rick Arnold, Gary Katz, Myron Ferguson.
Some of us will be at the Remodelers Show October 23, 24, 25 doing demonstrations. Katz has some trim carpentry, Mike Sloggatt will be installing kitchen cabinets, I'll be doing the greatest variety - Fibercement siding and trim, Replacement Windows, Cool Roofs for Hot Climates and Tips & Tools. Fine Homebuilding will have a booth and the editors will be hanging out.
JLC Live Portland, OR will be December 4, 5, 6
Builders Trade 04 is the show in Worcester, MA in February. FHB will have a big presence. See the ads in FHB.
If anyone goes to these shows be sure to pull me aside and say Hi. I enjoy meeting FHB readers and other builders/remodelers in general.

Ok, so you've covered the middle states, the northesast, and the northwest. How about something in the southwest?Do it right, or do it twice.
JLC Live next year: Anaheim, CA May 20, 21, 22
Is that southwest enough?
We may also be at the Sunbelt Builders Show in Texas in October 2004 with the JLC Live crew (or part of us)
MG
Calif is not part of the southwest. Actually, they are part of the US only becasue the weirdos need some place to call home. Dallas would be an excellent site. Wait...you didn't say Dallas, you said Sunbelt Builders Show...where is that?Do it right, or do it twice.
In two weeks it's in Dallas but in 2004 I'm not sure where it will be. There won't be live demonstrations as far as I know at this year's Dallas show but next year is very likely.
Another show that should have live demos in 2004 is Surfaces. I think it's in Las Vegas. We'll be doing wood, laminate and engineered flooring as well as tile and so forth. Maybe some plastic laminate countertops.
I went to the remodelers show last fall in Indianappolis. It was my first and was pretty cool.
if anything I got a chance to meet THE Sonny Lykos in person.
This year it's off to Baltimore for the show. I hope to meet some of you guys there this year.
If you're planning on going drop me a line.

Andy,
Will you guys be at the International Builder's Show?
I had planned on a JLC Live in Vegas this year, but it's not happening.
-Kit
Yes, most of the editors and probably a contributing editor or two will be at the Builder's Show. Stop around. Assuming I'm there, you'll recognize me by my Amish good looks.Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
You guys don't know how lucky you are , the biggest toys shops in the world at your door step, Down here we only get a fraction of the gear you see.
Going to the Working with Wood show this week in Melbourne, cheque book fully armed.
cheers Johnhttp://www.johnwalkerbuilders.com
If you do any cabinetry or face frame building, try looking for a Kreig Jig. Those things are worth their weight.
Andy,
Is this an invitation??? "...and probably a contributing editor or two "
I've been offered two jobs at the show. One starting at Christmas helping build the NextGen house in preparation for the Consumer Electronics Show and NAHB (shows are back to back). And offered a job doing demos at the NAHB show. Of course, who knows if these things will pan out. Everyone talks big until it's time to book flights and hotel rooms.
Rick and I made a proposal to Jon Miller for us to do live Tips and Technique demos and Cool Tool demos at your booth. But I guess the booth space is already crowded since he never got back to us. Just have to plan for '05 and order a double booth. You guys need some action at your booth beyond shaking hands and a billboard size backdrop of me.

How about a billboard sized picture of Heidi from "Home Improvement" ???I don't repeat gossip, so listen carefully the first time.
How about Heidi bobl Volo Non Voleo
Naw - Then they'd never get ANYTHING done.....................(-:A small town that cannot support one lawyer can always support two.
They supply Hiedi and we'll run a deversion.
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
Let's analyse that idea for a minute.
If you put up a display sized image of what's her name on the back wall of the booth, guys can stand in the aisle and gander without ever entering the booth to sign up for magazine subscriptions or to browse the Taunton books to buy. ( BTW, I just got suckered into that 50% off header on this website - two out of three books I bought are not the sales ones. The old loss leader strikes again.)
What we need for a poster is one that will entice the guys to actually enter the booth.
Now, I was thinking that if you could make a laser engraved 3D image of you new helper - you know the one I mean - and mount it an the wall at just the right height, then everyone would be approaching to be at just the right angle to look up the ladder at her...
But they'd be IN the booth in stead of out in the aisle..
Excellence is its own reward!
I know, looking at a guy with a recip saw in his hand just doesn't reach the mark does it.....
Mike, didn't see you at the tailgate party fri. Meant to say hello earlier but you were scampering around that ground level roof and from the looks of things, you didn't need any interuption. I would hope when that roof's atop a wall you slow her down a bit.
Thanks for making the trip.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Where's that one at? I might be on vacation that week.I didn't go to work today. The little voices in my head told me to stay home and clean my guns.

Wish that danged show was closer. Only way I could make that would be to fly, and that ain't in the budget.
Would be nice to actually see your ugly mug..................(-:"We, too, born to freedom, and believing in freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. We, and all others who believe as deeply as we do, would rather die on our feet than live on our knees." [Franklin Delano Roosevelt]

I actually may use my credit card air miles to fly from NY..stupid AA Airlines only lets me use em' on non holidays. With a kid, we can only go away on holidays... I have enough air miles to fly around the world ten trillion times I think......Just want to take advantage of the miles before AA goes outta biz...grrrrr.
Yeh, it'd be fun to spend some time with you.
Be well Ron,
andy........ok ok so my first lumber delivary was spose to be here in the A.M......they have two minutes left.By the way.this'll be my first experiance with TJI's...and suggestions?

Don't cut 'em too short. Once they're too short you can cut 'em off as much as you want and they're STILL too short. And they're expensive to replace.
Any other helpful suggestions I can offer ???Don't you have to go feed your flying monkeys?
I understand that they are a little floppy until you get them installed.
Can't he just cut them about 3 inches long that then bow them to make them fit?
Well, bowed floor joists should fit in well with the carachter of an older home like his.....................(-:Bumpersticker: Watch out for the idiot behind me.
Hey anybody know about shows on the southern east coast, near the Carolinas? Maybe. Nothing ever happens here but some of us would love to learn more from those of you with lots more experience
AJH
I don't know of any shows in the Carolinas. Closest to you will be Remodelers Show in Baltimore. The Southern Building Show usually revolves between Atlanta and Orlando - I've never been and am not sure what there is to offer.
JLC is looking for another location to produce a show for 2004 or 2005. If you lobby them they may make it in the Carolinas. Never know. I met one of the guys who lobbied JLC to start in Columbus OH. He said it took a couple years.

Great!
Hey Mike,
I was there and stayed in Jed Dixon's and Tom's classes the whole time. How to build spiral staircases and how to build Rake walls. It was great stuff. If you were at that "party" thing on Friday night, I was the one who told the story about my idiot employee who shot himself in the leg with the nail gun, then fell off the roof, then fell throught the floor joists all in about 3-4 weeks time!
I learned a lot and look forward to next year. I might get a chance to check out MD. Hope to see ya there.
Your's was my favorite story! I'd already heard Carl's story.
One of these days I want to see Jed Dixon build the curved stairs. I use a different system but his looks easier.
Glad to hear you liked the show.
Mike
