Building a House Under Barn-like Shelter
On a recent podcast of FHB, I heard about this idea. Here is a picture of the barn structure.

The idea was you build that, and build your house under it, sheltered from direct sun/rain/snow. I’ve been following DIY podcasts for years and own a couple properties. At some point before I die, I want to build a house from the ground up. I thought this might be very helpful, giving me the time to do that. The podcast kinda half joked about it, not sure if it is a real idea or not. Can this be done? How easy is it to build one of these structures and take down. If I want to build my own house in a couple years, I don’t want to spend 6 months assembling this barn.
Is anyone else curious about this idea/concept?

Building your house without weather?
Where’s the fun in that.
If it is areal idea it’s not a very good one, IMHO.
I don’t understand do you move the house or take down the barn? Or you just have a barn with a house in one corner?
@Primitive, I personally would take down the barn, in the podcast they talked about leaving it up and having extra protection, but I would either want to build another or just have a barn nearby.
That's a neat idea! It looks like a solid structure that could provide great shelter for building your house. Assembling it might take some effort, but if it saves you time and hassle later on when you're ready to build your house, it could be worth it. Plus, having that shelter could give you more flexibility in your construction timeline.
It's always good to explore different options, especially if they can make your dream of building a house from scratch more achievable. Do some more research and maybe talk to some experts to see if it's a feasible and practical idea for your situation!
Ya my concern is how long it would take to build the barn, I was hoping after listening to the Podcast other people had already done this or plan to. Being sheltered while building a house sounds great to me. I get that the barn is an extra expense that doesn't make sense for a crew, but it would just be me, taking my time on it.
And here I thought it was a joke.
Or maybe a spam link for that “barn”.
I can’t fathom FHB having a podcast on this method.
And going to your link, sure looks like spam. 15 grand for an umbrella to build a house under …… then what, move the house or try to disassemble that structure …….
Or are you serious and are talking panelizing the house, finding a place to keep the parts is pcs till you assemble?
Seems pretty goofy.
I've never built a house so, this seemed like a great idea to make building a house more comfortable. If assembling and disassembly was relatively easy... Ya build it and take it down. Then build it again for a barn or the next house :-D
That's a cool concept! Building your house under a barn-like shelter sounds like a great way to protect it from the elements while you work on it. I can see how it might give you the time and flexibility to build your dream house from scratch.
As for how easy it is to build and take down, it probably depends on the specific structure and your DIY skills. It's definitely worth looking into if you're serious about building your own house in the future. Maybe some folks here have tried something similar and can share their experiences!
Building your house under a shelter like that could save a ton of hassle with weather delays during construction. As for how easy it is to put up and take down, that's a good question.
