We’re trying to plan a 2500ft2-ish timber frame. I’ve talked to framers in my area (western NY/northern PA) about frame species, design, etc. One thing I’m interested in is supplying the cants for the frame. I have access to hemlock, white pine, red/white oak, and cherry and a handsaw mill. Once we settle on a design, I’d like to let the cants air dry for about a year to minimize checking. What would be some consideration for these various species? Can they be mixed (i.. oak posts and rafters I/ cherry knee braces)?
I’ve read some other postings on ESP/SIP. Use these or stick frame’ the walls? Do the ESP/SIP really make them inexpensive to heat?
How about price comparison between a timberframe package and one of those manufactured stick built packages?
Now a question for owners, does the charm wear off? Any regrets?
Oh, one last thing, any advice for soothing my wife during the building process? I’d like to do most work myself or with a small crew/subject experts.
