Need some advice if anyone has done this… have a house I worked on. Has green plastic shutters with a green door (eck). House has been sitting on the market for awhile… I think it simply doesnt have curb appeal. I need to sell it… so I was going to make shutters (barn style with the Z). Stain the shutters w. Cabot and add some hardware and paint the door red. I thought this might help with the curb appeal. Just didnt know the specs on building them (i.e. should I route the edges…do this or that). ANY thoughts much appreciated (where to get inexpensive decorative hardware)…

I have built shutters for several clients. I always use tongue and groove (v-groove) 1x6 cedar. One thing I've seen that I hate is shutters that aren't proportionate in size to thhe window. Even though all the shutters out here in Cali. see to be non-functioning plant on type , I feel that thhey should look like they would actually cover the window. WHen I build them I stain the individual peices on all sides first, then I staple them together with horizontall strips of Pressure treated plywood on thte back side. This holds them together and keeps them off the wall. Then I screw them to the wall in such a way thatt the Z will cover the screw heads. The Z I build in the shop using bicuits and gorilla glue. Next week I building some shutters that rre to be painted. These I'm going to build out of exterior mdf. I'll just cut the sheet to size then route the v-grooves. I'll probable hang iit the same way.
