Does anyone have a good idea for gathering cost estimates for building materials? Do I just go to a building supply and cost items one by one? Any recommendations on reference materials?

i've never used it but i think home depot.com can get you prices to get you in the ball park. most lumber yards will do it for a small fee. larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
1. Work up your material list.
2. Have all your like materials together. ie) 2x4' together on the list. Drywall sizes together etc. (There is nothing more annoying for the salemen to jump back and forth all over the computer system finding your prices. This way there is less searching.)
3. Harware items it is usually best to grab the prices yourself off the shelf.
4. Go prepaired with a CLEAR, DETAILED sketch of project with DIMEMSIONS. This way you'll be prepared to answer questions the saleman might have.
5. Sheet goods (total sq ft. will do) throw in an extra sheet or two to cover waste.
6. Trim (total lineal ft plus 10%) don't go in with all the different lengths you think you need.
7. Go to a smaller lumber yard. A big Box store will only frustrate you in this process unless you are willing to do all the leg work yourself.
Have fun
