So we have purchased a 5 acre lot of land in Ne Kansas. It was previously used as farmland and this section was parceled out to 3.5 acre lots. There isn’t much in the way of trees and it is flat. We love the “scandanavian modern cabin/farmhouse” look. Simple box, gable roofs. What issues should we watch out for building on wide open space. I am guessing we should really focus on good windows with the wind but what else?

In flat Kansas, I would seriously consider storm shelter.
Yeah. I’m from there so I will for sure have one. Thinking of incorporating it into the basement under he front concrete porch
wind and sun orientation would guide my thinking as to how to site the house. Normally I'd say "the view" but presumably in your case that may be the same in all directions? Porches--which direction would be most pleasant for sitting and staring? Entries protected from blowing snow (or blowing dust?) Planning for gardens, trees, windbreaks?
I'd love to have 5 acres of empty to fill with plant life. Good luck!
Thanks for the ideas. I am for sure trying to think how We should position the house. The property runs north-south, property is roughly 350’widex650 deep. If house were to face road at 90degree it would face south. We are thinking we may try and design a simple, modern “Scandinavian” home that looks like a monopoly houses attach by atriums. I would like to add solar in future and the roofs would be be facing east and west instead of the South facing to be best.
You can also install solar on a garage/shed roof.
First of all, think about roof pitch
the small house is better to build in the middle of farmland, not to dark the future garden
and my recommendation, please, hire a specialist, the house is for a very long time and you need to make it comfortable
