Hi everyone,
I watched the :building strong deck stairs” video. I was wondering how can I install the first step, where the 2-4×4 columns? It looks pretty solid but, I have no idea how to do so.
Thanks

If you are referring to the 4x4 posts at the top of the steps, I hang them down 5 1/2" past the rim board. That way i can fasten my stringers to a 2x6 board and then screw that board to the 4x4 posts hanging down past the rim board

End of the video shows how to treat the bottom if it sits on a footing (or sidewalk) screw a 2x4 flat into the concrete, and then secure the stringers to it.
if you instead put the first (lower) step posts into the ground, below frost depth, (like the deck support posts) they should be stable enough.
If you are asking how to cut the first step to fit around the posts, there are two ways.
You can cut square holes and drop it over the posts. (will work if you make the hole a little larger than it has to be and the posts are set level)
The other way is to cut a slot in the end of the tread and drop it between the posts.
Hi,
I finally cut square holes and dropped the step over the posts and it worked.
Thanks for the advice.
