Exterior trim around brickmould window
I am about to install a jeld wen sliding brickmould vinyl integral fin window, and using it as a replacement. I have aluminum insulated lap siding that can’t be replaced. Old windows were 28 x 51(Exterior hole between j channel). The replacement is 60 x 48(rough opening) 62 x 50(outside of nailing flange).
The brickmould and j channel are already on the window itself. And will leave me a 1″ space around the window and 3″ on the bottom. HOW DO I FILL THE VOID…, between siding and j channel on the window?
If I remove the nailing fin from the window and the void would be 0″, or flush, besides still 2″ on the bottom.
How do I fill the void on the bottom?
Which way would be the best way to go about this?
Could I use the siding that I remove to piece in the bottom and caulk the sides and top with no nailing flange?
Or leave the nailing flange on, and piece in all the way around the window?
And should there be j channel installed under the siding and have a drip cap? Saying there is a j channel on the new window?..?
Also it’s old black fiberboard on a 24″ 2×4 centered wall.. with a layer of 8″ wood lap siding, and 8″ insulated alminum lap siding over top.
Can I just build out the rough opening out to the aluminum siding( approx. 5/8″, using osb, before I tape the rough opening? And would be over top the 1″ fiberboard or remove The fiberboard and build out 1 5/8″?
Really stuck on what to do and what would look the best? What route would you Go?
Please reply! I’m happy to see everyone’s opinion.
Thank you.

Would you post a picture of what you have?
And what sort of channel did the old casing have to the alum. siding?
Thanks
Otherwise, I’d tape the window from over the J and across and behind the existing siding and then mill the pvc casing to fit in the J and whatever your picture might show to work to the siding.
Okay. I'm not home currently. But the windows aren't in. The siding isn't cut just rough opening from the inside is done. The old windows just had aluminum flashing over old brickmould, and then j channel butted to it. Lots of caulk.
So I have to cut the aluminum siding back 1" or a little more than the rough opening, for the nailing flange.
And you would just place another piece of trim next to the brickmould and j channel on the window to the siding? And it would look half a** decent.
I have a cnc bed mill so I can do about anything needed to be done. And I will get pictures posted of new windows later.
Another option and ? Would be could cut off nailing flange and just drill and screw through frame and caulk holes shut? Like a replacement Then I would only have a gap on the bottom from the old windowsill, which I was going to put a couple of small pieces of cut off siding to fill the void.
Just didn't like the idea of going from siding then j channel, then off trim, then built-in j channel and brickmould again, looking right.
That’s why I ask for some pictures, I don’t think I understand the situation. Please forgive my internet blindness. And no to the halfazz’d look. Over 45 yrs getting paid to make houses look good, that would be the last thing I’d advise.
I’ll read over your posts a few more times and see if I can get a picture of the situation. ......Are you removing the window, frame, old brick mold ? Then you have a hole that you set the new window. Can you link a picture of this new window from Jeldwen and how much less it is to the finished siding each side and top/bottom?
Since at 70 my eyes and mind may becoming dim, hopefully someone else will be coming to your aid.....
Re read forum Calvin. I re worded it, and added pictures of my windows.
I will build out will so it will mount flush since there is 2 layers of siding. But still stuck on how to fix the gap under the window.
Since it already has brickmould and j channel around the window. Can I just add a small piece of siding under the window?
I can’t tell if the new window is picture framed w/brickmold or if it has an integral “sill”. Either way I’ll stick with my first response but definitely look at it in the field.
Tape in the fins for weather. Do whatever you can, bottom to top to keep out the water. Add new J to the either side siding. See if fitting pvc flat stock to either side ........and a “sill” sort of at the bottom.....fitting the top.....
This is too hard to explain and when I do try I think I’m dead azz’d wrong.
So, on the ground with what you got.......take some pcs of whatever and come up with what’s going to work and look good and be good against the weather.
I’m sorry to be of no help but I’m sure someone will fix you up. This is what would be advised from here: plan before ordering, start to finish. It’s way less painful. And I don’t mean to be a smart @zz.
Yea. I got them from my dad, have been laying around for a while, just now getting to it
