hi, I’m a homeowner building a balcony that’s 6’8×13’4 supported by diagonal steel cables. Across the front (13’4 direction) there will be a 4ply 2×10 beam. My question is how to best construct the beam. Was planning on construction adhesive and lots of nails, but wanted to check that that’s OK since I’m mounting joists flush to it with hangers, and I will want the load to be able to transfer between the members. Also, I’d like to get the plys compressed together nice and tight. Will nails be enough? Or will I need clamps or would I need to through bolt it? It’s standard #2 grade lumber. Still pretty wet.
Thanks!
Ben

A beam is composed of 6 planks, each 100 mm wide and 20 mm thick, piled loosely on each other to an overall dimension of 100 mm wide by 120 mm high. (a) Compare the strength of such a beam with that of a solid beam of equal overall dimensions. (b) What would be the ratio if the built-up beam consisted of a 12 planks each 100 mm wide by 10 mm thick?
