Hello All,
I am a newbie here and have some questions regarding built up shower base. I need to know what and how to build this 36 x 36 shower base. Do I start with laying down “hardi-Backer” first, and then an EPDM waterproofing membrane??? and then mortar/thinset and slope it towards the drain??? and then lay the floor tiles??? Any comment would be helpful, diagrams would be even better. Maybe there is an article one this on FHB Mag back issue.

There was a good FHB article last year or maybe a couple years ago. Sloped mortar bed first, membrane next (running up onto the studs), another bed on top, then tile. No backer board on the floor, just on the walls.
From the subfloor up to the top it is:
Subfloor
Building felt
2.4 Diamond Lathe
Sloped Mortar Bed Quarter inch per foot
PVC Liner
Another slopped Mortar Bed to final elevation
Thinset
Tile
Here are some good articles on the subject for you to view:

go to Home depot or lowes and get the Tauton press book "setting tile " by Byrne. It will have everything in it.
I thought you were going to say to goto the Home Depot "laying tile" presentation. Now that would be entertaining....! "Uhhh...are you going to show us how to float a mud bed...?"
