My roofer took delivery of a shipment of pre-painted metal, “Klassic Kolors II” pre-painted terne from Follansbee this morning. The surface of the metal is covered with bumps that look like goose bumps or zits.
He has never seen this before and his immediate reaction was, it’s unacceptable.
A Follansbee rep phoned us. He claims it happens from time to time in some runs of metal fabrication. It is in the metal, not the paint. He claims it does not compromise the roofing at all. It would not be noticeable from much of a distance, but since this is a 1-story structure, it will be quite noticeable under many lighting conditions along all the drip edges.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Thoughts?

You have to turn this around. He has you cornered or so he thinks.
Tell him that your attorney suggested that they make you a real sweet deal to keep the defective material and you in turn will cancel the court date.
There must be some kind of specifications on this stuff................
I'd like to hear from someone who has used Follansbee products.
Apparently this is the oldest metal roofing company in the country, and they claim to be the only one that makes real terne roofing. They sent my roofer a test report claiming the blisters in the metal do not compromise performance of the paint. My roofer looked closely at some samples they'd sent. He says the blisters are there too, if you look closely. This reminds me of Mark Twain's response after hearing a Wagner concert. "Well, I guess it's not as bad as it sounds ..."
How big are the bumps? I've used quite a bit of this stuff and I've never seen such.

I'd say they are about the size of goose bumps on human skin, but flatter and more spread out.

How high do they protrude from the surface?
I just went out in the shop and felt a roll of plain terne II. It seems like it may have them, but I've never really noticed them before. They're in the terne coating, but if we're talking about the same thing, they don't amount to much.
I looked at the KK sheets I have laying around and I can't notice the bumps on them.

They protrude enough to be seen and to be felt with the hand.
I dunno, maybe half a millimeter.Follansbee sent me a study that examined the cause of the bumps.
They occur during the baking of the primer onto the metal. If the ovens are allowed to overheat slightly, then the terne melts back a little under the primer and the bumps occur sporadically.Their sales rep says it occurs in maybe half their production runs.
It is present in about half of the samples they send out, so it is nothing they try to hide.My position is, they are in effect selling 2 products. Metal with bumps, and metal without. I don't think it completely ruins the look, but I don't think I should pay as much as for smooth metal. He offered me a 25% discount, which he said he wants to confirm with the distributor first thing in the morning. If the distributor agrees to pass on the discount, and I don't hear anything too damning on this thread by morning, I'm inclined to tell my roofer to proceed with the installation.
