You all have been so helpful in the past that I thought I turn to you for advice and information.
I have a contract to buy a house. I’m between a rock and hard place with a requirement to move by August 15 (the house I’m renting is being sold) in an area that doesn’t have many houses go on the market (Southern Vermont) that I’d want to live in that don’t cost a HUGE bundle. So I offered on a house that I have many reservations about including it’s size (small).
So the housing inspection was yesterday – and we realized that the oil tank is underground. There’s no basement in the house – it’s built on a slab. Since the house is 20 years old, so is the tank. So – what are my options? Are there any good options?
Thanks for your thoughts.

getting away from buried oil tanks around here (RI) - find out what it costs to remove it (and contaminated soil, if any), and try to adjust the price accordingly - check with the local environmental officials if the tanks are allowed and then the building inspector's office about same - might be a problem, might not - good luck
First, as part of the sale get full coverage (insurance) for the inground tank and any problems it might cause ie leaks etc. Once you have the house, get the tank properly "abandoned" as in sealed, removed etc, Then if you must use oil install above ground tank so you know if there are any leaks. Just for info: a home down the road from me had to do inground leaking tank cleanup/fix cost around $170,000.
