I am getting conflicting answers from different plumbers. For PVC 4 inch sewer line, do you need to cover with pea gravel or can you just cover it up with dirt?
Also, comments on running new poly water line through old concrete sewer line? After I wash it out of course.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I'm a Plumber and I would prefer to bed the sewer pipe in pea gravel or sand but if it is clean fill (no rocks) it shoul be okay. As to the poly waterline in an old sewer line I would worry about permeation thru the wall of the pipe so would only do this with a soft copper line. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the response, yes that helps alot.

A good reasons for using sand or pea gravel is that when somebody needs to dig near your pipe, it's easy to tell when they're getting close...especially with a backhoe.
I can definitely appreciate that. I am measuring and documenting all the locations of my sewer and water lines as I find them.

Another reason for the pea gravel is that it can get pushed and smooshed around a little. This is a very good thing if you're on expansive soil, like the adobe we have around here. It increases the amount of soil movement you can have before the pipes break.

Check building code - In NY it can be screened gravel, clean earth (no boulders that could break pipe), or sand - believe needs to be 12" above top of pipe
Thanks for all of the replies.
Where the pipe will be located is on the side of the house where there won't be much in the way of traffic or anything to cause shifting or movement. I agree, checking with code is a good idea as well.
