I’ve got to remove a cast iron tub and get it down a set of tight stairs in a nice home, can I just smash it up with a sledge hammer and take it down in the garbage can!! or is that impossible/dangerous? Any other suggestions?
Thanks

IMERC's method is the best way to do it. Usually cover the tub with an old moving blanket (U-haul has then cheap) and go to town with a sledge hammer. Great job when you are pissed off at someone. Gets rid of all your anger... at least for a few minutes.
The porcelain splinters are like glass, and breaking the first piece is the most difficult, but breaking the CI tub into pieces is the only way I do it. Our local trash transfer station does not charge for the CI.

I bet they dont!
Busted up neighbors 400# tub for him last month, threw it in with a few engine blocks and got $40 for it at the scrap yard. (scrap yard does not payout for under 500#)
$200 a ton last month, up 100% from 2 months before that!
Wail away ! Last one I did, I got $15 at the scrap yard for the cast iron ! Whoo-ooo !

I've stopped breaking them up, the residual damage alot of the time is just not worth it. Demoing other parts of the home? Might not matter, I've gone the finess route, once out of the bathroom 4 strong or (2) guys carry it out.
I think it would be more dangerous to try and carry a three hundred pound tub down the stairs.
Put on your safety glasses, get really pissed, and pound that thing.
As others have said, the pieces (porcelein and the cast) will be really sharp use caution cleaning up.
We do it all the time. We use a packing blanket and the items IMERC mentioned. The only way to go as far as I am concerned. We can have one out in 20 minutes. DanT
Ditto what everyone else said. Just want to add that the easiest place to start is on the outside near the floor. When you get a crack started, work along it as if your cutting it into sections. If I'm working solo I usually break it into 6 sections, but if someone is there to help carry it, four sections is manageable.
Oh, and don't warn anybody of what you're about to do. It's funny as h*ll when they come running to see what happened. :D

Did it today, the sledge just bounced off for a while but then it became easier. Walked it down the stairs in buckets. It was kinda fun but I'll be sore tomorrow. Tried to get into an argument with the wife last night to get wound up but for some reason she wouldn't bite which pissed me off anyway!
In buckets??? Wow, you must have really went at it! I guess you really are going to be sore tomorrow.--------------------------------------------------------

Figured if I tried to carry large pieces down I'd probably trip and ding the stairs anyway so I took my time.
Better safe than sorry. :)--------------------------------------------------------
