Upgrading the footings and columns that support a girder beam is an opportunity to level out the floor above.

Kostello,
I hear you, we're locked in until about Oct '04, now. Actually since about Sept. '03. Got one customer been playing with home plans for a year and a half now. Hope they take another 6 to 8 months to clear it up!! :) Sure beats wondering where the next job is!! Time for a rate adjustment, I guess.

All year???? Crap I'm hoping to get some work in January. lol We've been off most of 2 weeks with snow & ice. Supposed to clear up tommorow & Friday. Too much family time. I've got cabin fever!
Geez and here I was feeling good about knowing what Feb looked like. I'm the same as last year. Got work in the immediate future and counting my lucky stars. Theres a whole lot of folks working on Nintendo these days around here. Just glad I'm not one of them . . . yet.
The trick is always getting to about mid March. Then everythings hunky dory again until Thanksgiving.

Booked through March. Got a couple of proposals out there too. Good start for the year. DanT
I've got about 4 multi-week projects lined up right now, small stuff always seems to pop up as well so I'm not worried. I think everyone in our area has bought one of those "How to be a handyman" books or all the laid off factory guys and such are doing it as the whole construction sector is just full of these 'man with truck willing to do anything for $15/hour" listing that they do add-ons, renovations, painting, yardwork, cleaning carpets, masonry, flying to the moon. Who would trust some fool who can't even spell remodeling or construction and feels the need to print their fliers in all capitol letters I don't know. I can't imagine an insurance representative telling me I have fire damage and need a new electrical panel and then calling Stu Handyman who claims he does the "bestest construktion work" to do it.(All reputable handymen feel free to ignore this rant as I'm tired of the local idiots calling themselves electricians for changing lightbulbs and bidding 1/4th of what all the real tradesmen charge).

Ray:
I assume you are licensed and registered. (There are TWO licenses to get in Mass.) I pay my fees, pay into a quarantee fund, and pay ever-escalating insurance premiums, and what do I get for my honesty? The law says everyone has to be registered and any advertising must show the registration number. Pick up any paper, and you can find dozens of ads with no numbers. I'd like to know where my money is going and who's supposed to enforce the rules. Am I the only sucker around?

I actually didn't know the regulation about the # on the advertising but I was aware of the restrictions on commercial vehicles that no one follows. Well, in Boston no one follows parking regulations or traffic regulations either, kind of a mixed batch of folks in these parts. We carry the home improvement license and the construction supervisor's license. My electrician has a Mass journeyman's license and the plumber is a licensed master plumber. No one is allowed to sub for me without the proper insurance and worker's comp(yes I give the exemption for sole propietors as they can't carry worker's on themselves here). We also have the EPA license which is required for heat pump work as well as use HVACR technicians on any units above 10tons(which no on else seems to do in but I require when working for a commercial real estate co. in a management capacity).

We're still busy, which surprises me. We generally slow down quite a bit in December and have to lay people off before Christmas. (Which really stinks)
Sounds like my job is fairly secure. (I think) They laid off 25% of the design staff last week. And they're keeping me piled up with work. Guess they figure if we see things easing up a bit we'll all screw around (Like posting on message boards) instead of working.
I'm already getting in a lot of prints to quote for spring. That normally doesn't start until the end of February. Don't know if that's a sign of things to come or what.If you are good, you will be assigned all the work.If you're really good, you will get out of it.
hey Al, Im from Sharon. Great town huh? Are you from there originally? Whats the name of your company?
