Even companies you think are reliable and even when they advertise in “Fine Homebuilding” it seems everyone is out to rip you off. My recient experiance with Lumber Liquidators gave me several lessons. I had spent several thousands of dollars with them prevously, so I considered myself a good customer. I needed hardwood for a bedroom floor I was fininhing, I went to Lumber Liquidators and bought 10 boxes of 3/4 inch 3.5 clear oak hardwood floor that was in the “odd lot” section. I thought that “odd lot” was just that, a short supply that someone wanted to get rid of, not so. When I got home I noticed one box had been opened prior to my purchase. I didn’t think anything of it, until I opened it. It was not clear like the other boxes it was a dark stained wood like gunstock, but I figured, no problem, I’ll take it back and exchange it. I live 75 miles from the store so I started out on my treck. I brought a piece of the clear with me along with the case of the dark stained wood. When I got there the store manager was busy so another man who said he was the manager’s boss said he would take care of me. He was the Vice President of Sales, visiting the store that day. I took him to the van to show him the problem. He held up the two obvously different pieces and to my suprise he said they were the same and he would not exchange them. I couldn’t believe this so I brought the wood to the manager and all he could say was, “he’s my boss”.
I learned not to ever use Lumber Liquidators again, in addition, if you read what an “odd lot” is, its not extras, it is seconds or defective lumber.
Since it was the Vice President of Sales, who made the decision, I have to believe this is not a local problem but a company policy.
By the way their reciept says “100% SATISFACTION GUARANTE” on the first page.
I’M NOT SATISFIED!!!!!

Get on the horn with their upper upper management. Call the Better Business Bureau. You'll get it settled.
With a name like Lumber liquidators I don't expewct anything much out of them. They liquidate culls. That is what the do. They turned the odd lot into a liquid asset. Liquid must be frozen to solidify. It'll be a cold day in hell when they ...
sorry for the attempted humor
But I have the same impression of them after making one purchase. And service is pretty much non-existant

Liquidators ...
Odd lot ...
I've had the same impression of them and haven't bought from them in the first place.
Aside from the crappy service ... I'd say they sell the bargains people are looking for...
You usually get what U pay for.
No buyer beware ... just common street smarts.
Stuff's usually cheap for a reason.

I am not so sure of that. I have a feeling that is the way that they got started. But they number of nationally advertised products that they have to stock at their stores. I did not count them all up, but about 50-60.
Now I have not been in any of their stores, but seen a number of adds and they have been on Ask This Old House.
I have seen some local stores do that. They start and still do liquadations, but they need more complete stock to allways have product to sell.
That much is true but they still come from a background of basing their business philosophy on cheapo sales and not quality or service.
I've got a longer story about them but that is the short of it. No more time right now..

I had intended on purchasing about $8k of stock from them about two years ago and then about $5k a year later. Each time, they never returned phone calls nor any other messages regarding availability nor quantity so needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. I can't claim a bad experience with them...just NO experience based on their own poor business tactics.
Maybe they did me a favor?

Maybe??????? are you breathing?
I've had kind of a non experience with them. They are close by where I live. Went there looking for some prefinished maple flooring (440 sq. ft.). The guy in the showroom pointed at some crappy looking displays and disappeared. I did too.

I live 45 minutes from their Lynchburg store. They have a horrible reputation around here. My brother was ripped off there not to long ago. It is a shame they are allowed to advertise in FHB, but I guess their money is as good as the rest! Buy cheap...get cheap...
