CA Title 24 Outdoor Contemporary Lights?
I’ve been frustrated looking for a couple of contemporary exterior lights that meet CA Title 24 requirements which require either a photosensor or high efficiency bulb (read, generally not screw in). Any suggestions welcome; my wishlist:
- Title 24 Reqt.: Would love to have a photosensor and timer combo so that I can program it to come on at dark and stay on for say 4 hours. Otherwise would be fine with the high efficiency bulb.
- Style: Contemporary, simple, clean and maybe even modern available in black or stainless or aluminum.

Can't you use a separate timer or photosensor?
Title 24, the 2008 version, requires more than a photo control
or timer...it requires a motion sensor also.
It can be difficult to find these two features in the style you want.
One option is to convert the fixture to a fluorescent, with a bi- pin socket. Not possible in many fixtures, if there's no room for the ballast.
I've had to have fixtures fabricated to meet LEED requirements, which require fluorescent lamp/bi-pin socket AND photo control AND motion sensor.
It will be simpler when we can get factory-made, compliant fixtures in all styles.
The exterior lighting industry IMO is sorely behind the development of good products for exterior lights. You want a photocell for sure. Personally, I'd like to use a motion sensor as well (rather than a timer/time clock). Also, don't forget about dark sky and light trespass compliant (full cutoff fixtures, I think some call them). Hard to find. I've looked in many lighting shops only to find second rate incandescent fixtures that blind the average passerby with a view of a bright lamp in the eyes.
Wow, those are nice ... but really pricey! My wife and I found some at Lowes ... special order that were 1/4 domes and used CFL lamps ... but only photocell control ... so either on all night or on at night when you switch them on/off. They were only about $40, I think. Nice looking fixture, but again ... retrofitting w/ motion sensor more difiicult.
BTW - you can control any light/fixture/circuit w/ a time clock/timer. Personally, I don't like the time clock option for e.g. residential and most other applications as you never know when you might need the light for late night convenience (or security).
