OK, Just shoot me. I went to install my new dishwasher and the opening is too low after a very expensive tile job. Am I nuts or is not the standard opening supposed to be 34″ tall? I am hurting with 33 3/4. Shoot me with a large caliber and get this over with.

I assume that the counter top is what got tiled including the front edge. Some appliances have leveling feet that can be removed. Did you try tilting the unit back to get the top in first then push at the bottom?
Best to you and yours, Chris.
Some say I know too much? Can you ever?
34-1/2 is the usual finish.
Many DW co's require 33-7/8.
If you take the feet up, you might get it. Otherwise, see about removing the adj feet and shim to proper ht.
What's the countertop?

The feet are at zero, but I can check to verify. The counter is tiled along the front face. The Bosch instructions say 34 minimum and I believe them. It slides in til the front of the washer is almost in. Then some corner hardware gets in the way. These are plastic corners which I may be able to remove. I will have to ask the appliance folks. If it does not affect the integrity of the machine, that might save the day. If it voids the warranty, then I am screwed. Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
It's been a while on a bosch, feet/pads removable?
Drill out the tile right there by the feet?
Take out the tile and slide it in, retile up to it.
Shoot the guy that did this when you go to take it out.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

The last Bosch I installed kinda had a flat bottom. I remember there was a specific area the the water and power had to be run through. It also sat on three feet.
It was cool, there was a screw in the front to adjust the rear foot.
those corner brackets either white or kinda/sorta clear plastic?
going by memory ... but I think Bosch has plastic corners that the thin metal "brackets" slide into ... bend them one way and ya screw to the CT ... bend down the side and ya screw to the cab sides.
I know for a fact they will knock off .... usually when ya wish someone else didn't lose them during demo when the DW is to be reused!
and even though those metal straps never come out easy when ya have to change their direction ... they will fall out ... again ... usually during demo ... then get thrown away because no one knows what the hell they're for ...
so ... I'd bet there's a way to knock them loose ... now U just gotta find another way to attach the DW.
been a coupla months since I installed a Bosch ... can't remember if their are any knock outs or plugs for alternative mounting anywhere convient to cabinet mounting.
spray foam across the top?
wedges??
not like it's gonna walk across yer floor if leveled and wedged in there ...

Jeff, I thought I was on that plan, then I realized the door will hit the granite face as it opens. Damn! http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
Bang! - feel better now!?
Been there....
We have a lot of older homes and all sorts of counter top heights. I don't know if exchanging the DW is an option for you or not, but the ASKO and I think the Bosch DWs have lower space requirements, down to about 22-1/4" or thereabouts. The FisherPaykel dish drawers actually mount about 12" or so above the floor.

Well, then shoot me again if they have LOWER requirements! That means nothing else will go in. Quick, another shot please! Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
You misunderstand. That is a minimum. They still udjust up to the 34-1/2"

The top is granite tile, the face granite tile cut down and attached. Yes the bottom has channels for the power and the water. All in all its ok. On all four corners of the top are big plastic pieces. They look like packing but seem integral to the unit. I will have to ask the appliance store about that. If the front ones could come off, it would go in.Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
You said the feet were at ZERO. All DW's are different but do you gain any room if you REMOVE the feet entirely?
They are pretty flat thin feet. Not more than a sixteenth thick. Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
What kind of flooring do you have?.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Brand new bamboo, cabinets set on top of bamboo. Just went to appliance store. They said I am number 3 with this for the year already. Imagine that. Usually when folks refloor they forget the appliance height, which is not our case.
Their solution is better. Have the contractor pay the restocking fee for the appliance and get an ADA appliance that will adjust lower. Looks like the ASKO and the Jennair are my only two choices. C'est la Vie. Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
Get out a 4" dimond cutting wheel and trim the under side of the front edge. I had to do this on a kitchen which never had a dishwasher and the D/W would not fit unless I cut down the tile v-cap.
Tony, I know indeed that would work, but I really didn't pay thousands of bucks to have a notched counter edge. Yeah, aesthetics, but really, this is a pretty dumb mistake by these guys.
Indeed we put the flooring down wall to wall to prevent stuff like this. Our friends had advice to floor after cabinets were in and around an island too. This is just plain nuts. It saves nothing on cost overall. What you save on footage you pay on labor to cut around it. No way.
As for cutting into our new floor and leaving a place for future water damage, no way. That is kind of like wearing a dirty shirt cause your pants are dirty too! Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
OK. Looks like the only two machines that will now fit are the ADA rated ASKO and the Jennair. Any comments on either? I know that people have varying results with the same unit. Our Asko washer and dryer have done well. Jennair is Maytag which is someone else now.http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
ether, I want to understand how this situation happened. You floored first, set cabs on top. If non custom-storebought, the top would sit on 34-1/2''. The counter is tiled. Does the nosing tile somehow drop down below the top of the cabs (bottom of the countertop substrate?A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Here's a thought.
Go into the cabinets on either side of the dishwasher and lift up the countertop, CAREFULLY and evenly, just enough to slide the appliance into its slot. Consider also removing the little flat pads. That just might do it.
Gaaaaaaa! Granite tiled top! Gaaaaaa! Ralph you are scaring me!http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
Yes, that is correct. The tile/contractor hosed it up. Had the carp set the plywood higher, the tile man would not have followed his lead and tiled too low.http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com

I agree with an earlier poster, I would get out a Fein Multimaster and cut slots to receive the bottom rails. That is unless you can get by removing some of the plastic at the top of the tub.
I had to raise mine slightly and since I have Silestone top I added some blocking to the sides of the cabinets and screwed through the flange on the top corners of the tub to secure the d/w to the cabinets.

Just looked it up for a job this morning. Bosch needs 33 7/8" minimum clear. Perhaps a different dishwasher?
Swapped it out for an ASKO that meets ADA rules.http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
I was going to suggest cutting out floor a bit.Based on how close you said that it is I would think that you would only need to come out past the cabinet and inch or two (if any). And if the strips run parallel to the fron tthe cabinets then you could cut a filler and put it in place with a little construction adhesive. I should not show unless you get down on your hands and knees, but it does make a trap for water..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I offer no solution but just my small experience. My parents home in Mass was built in the early 50's and recently I had to work on their dishwasher. It was set below floor level about an inch or 1 1/2 inches. I don't know what happened during inital construction, but it looks like there was more flooring added after the cabinets were installed. On our Oklahoma home, our Massachusetts born builder suggested intalling the finish hardwood floor AFTER the kitchen cabinets were installed. I did not like that idea, and made them put the flooring underneath the cabinets as well. Good thing too. To illustrate the absurdity of this practice, he even wanted the flooring crew to install the floor with our island in place. Our island has four legs, so they would have to "cut in" the flooring around each leg, and then attempt to sand underneath the island to finish it!
In a few situations, I've had to remove the leveling feet to get the dishwasher into it's "hole" then use blocks and shims to raise and level it. It's a COLOSSAL PITA, but it can work.
IMHO, making sure the dishwasher will fit is one of the most important jobs in a kitchen remodel - or new build, too.
Did you take it out of the box first???

Another hassle with DW's is the insulation blanket that wraps the top and sides. In my experience, the specified opening dimensions don't include the blanket and I've had to fight with them more than once. - lol
You know, while cursing this nasty piece of work I had a thought. Most dishwashers are rather noisy, one of their biggest drawbacks. Why not make the cabinets on both sides of the DW a few inches shorter and keep the opening the same. Pop in some extra insulation on both sides and maybe staple some up underneath the counter. Might knock down a lot of noise.http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
Actually, our "new" one is pretty quiet. A couple of years ago I remodeled a neighbors kitchen and she wanted all black appliances. I replaced her "old" (maybe two years old) white Kenmore with a black one then put her old one in our kitchen replacing an old Whirlpool.
Those Kenmores are really quiet. We used to avoid running the Whirlpool in the evening because of the noise and the Kenmore is barely noticeable. An added bonus is the 2, 4, or 6 hour delay on the run time. Now, we can load it up after dinner, set the delay, and forget about it. The dishes are clean and dry the next morning and we never hear a thing during the night.
Funny you bring up the idea of making the DW cab a different size.
I saw a show the other day that had the DW sitting up about 12" higher then the surrounding cabs. The idea of this was so that you wouldnt have to bend over so far to load/unload the DW.
If done right it could/would look good.
They do it for washing machings so why not DW'ers?
