I’ve got a neighbor, retired steel worker and heck of a guy. He was asking if I could recommend any cheap, simple CAD software for the PC. Being a graphic designer ( on a Mac) I am of no help to him.
He’s looking to do simple drawings for cabinet and other woodworking projects, something he fills his time doing. Says he’s tired of using a drafting table. Truth is he’s gotten hooked on computers in his retirement and is looking to learn something new, without having to buy into a high priced CAD package.
Any ideas?

search the old threads on this. I think a couple guys have mentioned one called DesignCAD that is decent for under a hundred.
There are a dozen versions of TurboCAD at all different prices he can find on the web too that would be worthwhile for him

If all he wants to do is replace the drafting board with an electronic version, then he's looking for a 2d program. Good news: they're cheap. bad news: there's lots to choose from. Try AutoSketch from AutoCad, about $130 on Amazon.

Thanks to you and Piffin for the suggestions. I plan on passing on the info to my neighbor over a cold glass of Harp tomorrow night.
Sketchup got a lot of good reviews here also... but it's around $500 if i rememberMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I use AutoSketch and it's perfect for me. All I need are simple floor plan, elevation, and detail drawings. It has a few shortcomings but it's way better than pencil and paper, especially if you have to show drawings to your clients.
