Will the recent California firestorm create remodeling jobs? Is it a good time to plan a move to California? My fiance is from San Diego and wants to move back (from cincinnati—can you blame her?) My fear is that there aren’t any good paying remodeling jobs since there must be a million Mexicans working for less than minimum wage (why hire a white boy when you can hire three Mexicans for the same price?)) With the destruction of so many homes, is it possible that a vacuum for remodeling companies will materialize?

I was in the Bay Area during '91 when there was a huge fire in the Berkeley/Oakland hills. It did not create an immediate, huge demand, but I did do some work on new homes during the next 5 years or so. From what I understand the SD market is pretty well trashed for tradesmen right now: not much new tract work, lots of illegal workers. I'd be careful. I can hook you up with someone down there to email if you want.
lot of licensing hurdles to jump over in CA

Excellence is its own reward!
So you know the San Diego area?
Me thinks most of the $ in re-building will be from scratch customs, and not remodeling.
If you are decent in whatever trade you specialize in, I would imagine that you could stay fairly busy down there.
I think your main problem may be finding a place to live that is affordable. Can you do that?
I would recommend that you consider all of your options before you make the leap.
In any case, good luck!
Well, the sun rose... in so many colours it nearly broke my heart... Worked me over like a work of art...and I'm all part of that...
Remodeling?
Does this look like a remodeling opportunity for you?

Looks like a handyman special. A few DW repairs and new paint job is all that is needed..
